Colonels senior sets record for most single-season (six) and career (eight) Player of the Week nods

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Ty Gordon is the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Weekly awards are presented by GEICO.

The fifth-year guard sets the conference record for most weekly honors in a single-season (six) and a career (eight) after averaging 29.5 points and 3.5 assists per game in the Colonels’ two wins last week. After a relatively slow return from injury, Gordon returned to his dominant self, shooting 56.8 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from three.

Nicholls (18-9, 8-2 SLC) defeated McNeese (82-73) and HBU (84-70) at home last week to run its win streak to seven games. The Colonels embark on their final roadtrip of the season against Northwestern State at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday before visiting rival Southeastern at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week – Ty Gordon, Nicholls – Fifth-Year – Guard – Tunica, Miss.
Gordon notched a career-high 31 points in the win over McNeese, shooting 12-of-21 (.571) from the field and drilling five three-pointers. He also tied his season high with five assists. With the Cowboys ahead in the final minutes of the first half, Gordon converted each of his last five shots of the period to give him 20 points and put his team up by nine.

He followed it up with 28 points against HBU on 9-of-16 shooting (.563) with five more three-pointers and a pair of assists. Gordon’s scoring average moved over the 20-point mark once again, ranking 16th nationally at 20.2 per game. He also maintains the eighth-most three-pointers made per game among Division I student-athletes (3.61).
