Nicholls guard Barrios buries game-winner, earns another SLC weekly honor

Senior guard tallies game-high 27 points to go along with 100th career block

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Cassidy Barrios is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season, league officials announced Monday. All Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.

The senior tabbed a 60-percent three-point average in the Colonels’ lone game of the week against Louisiana-Monroe.

Barrios also registered a 55-percent shooting clip from the field over 33 minutes of play last week.

Women’s Basketball Player of the Week – Cassidy Barrios, Nicholls – Sr. – Guard – Raceland, La.

Barrios scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Nicholls to a 55-54 comeback victory on the road against in-state rival ULM. Nicholls fell behind 33-10 early in the third quarter before Barrios locked in and marched the Colonels to a 28-point third quarter performance. The senior then came through in the final 30 seconds of regulation, giving Nicholls a one-point lead on two occasions, including an off-balanced runner that secured the Colonels’ victory with 7.8 seconds remaining. Barrios, who had to sit out early with two fouls, finished her day shooting 11-of-20 from the field with a trio of three-pointers (3-5), eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and her 100th career-block.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
