WESTWEGO – Two evenly matched teams figured to produce an evenly matched game in the semifinals of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic Friday afternoon as Landry-Walker and Crescent City Christian squared off in the Boys State Bracket.

The game lived up to its billing and the Chargin’ Bucs had the last run in a game of runs in a 53-48 victory over the Pioneers.

With the game tied 46-46 in the final minute, Jason Joseph buried a 3-pointer to put Landry-Walker ahead to stay at 49-46 before Jamond Vincent and Shadon Green each hit a pair of free throws to put the game away.

There were four lead changes to start the game before Landry-Walker went on a 12-0 run to make it 16-5. The Chargin’ Bucs led 16-8 after one quarter behind seven points from Shadon Green.

The Pios had a 5-0 run in the second quarter to pull within five points at 22-17 before Landry-Walker carried a 29-23 to the break behind 13 points from Green.

Crescent City Christian got hot in the third quarter, closing the quarter on a 12-0 run to tie the game 37-37 as Jordin Farrell scored eight points in the quarter.

The run continued into the fourth quarter as Crescent City built a 41-37 lead before Landry-Walker awakened with a 7-0 run to take a 44-41 lead. After Aiden Daliet hit a 3-pointer to tie it, the two sides exchanged baskets, setting the stage for the final minute heroics of the Chargin’ Bucs.

Landry-Walker head coach Wilfred Antoine knew it would be a tough game.

“I liked the way we responded after they made their run,” Antoine said. “Crescent City is a real good ball club, a championship program. They fought back. I didn’t think we did a good job of boarding the ball well. They outrebounded us but I thought our kids responded. We buckled down and got some stops and pushed ahead.”

Antoine was not surprised that Joseph stepped up in the clutch.

“It was a good drive by Dywan Griffin to hit Jason Joseph and he knocked down the big three for us from the corner,” Antoine said. “He’s a pretty good shooter.”

Green led Landry-Walker (11-6) with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists while Vincent finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Farrell topped Crescent City Christian (9-15) with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Byron Joshua had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Glenn Rhone finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Landry-Walker advances to the title game Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the matchup pitting Lafayette Christian against Archbishop Hannan. You can watch the championship game live at CrescentCitySports.com.

“We look forward to trying to win a title in this prestigious tournament,” Antoine said. “That was the goal coming in and we have a chance to achieve it.”
