Jesuit, Shaw repeat as state wrestling champions

BOSSIER CITY – It was a combination of the old tried and true, the new power and the intruder making itself at home close to home at the 2024 LHSAA state wrestling championships at Brookshire Grocery Arena Saturday.

Jesuit and Archbishop Shaw repeated as state champions while North DeSoto earned its first-ever state title.

The Blue Jays captured their 25th overall title, holding off Holy Cross, which has won 28 state titles, for the Division I championship. Brother Martin was third.

Jesuit scored 321 points to 275.5 for the Tigers. Brother Martin finished third with 248.5.

The Blue Jays had three state champions, including Bodi Harris, who won a second straight state title, taking home first at 120 pounds. Jackson Calderaro was victorious at 215 pounds.

Nationally ranked heavyweight and U.S. Naval Academy-bound Spencer Lanosga repeated as state champion at 285 pounds for a third straight year, concluding a brilliant tournament by pinning all five opponents he faced in the first period.

Holy Cross had winners, including Anthony Oubre (113), Landon Smith (126), Gunner Guidry (144) and Nick DiGerolamo (157) who captured his second straight state title.

Brother Martin, which has won 21 state titles, had a pair of champions, including a repeat winner in Richie Clementi (138), along with Rory Horvath (165). It was the third state title in succession for Clementi.

St. Paul’s finished sixth and the Wolves won a pair of titles with Scott Cascio (106) upsetting top-seed Michael Barnett of Jesuit 9-6 and Conlan Enk (150) and Jackson Peak (190).

Archbishop Shaw repeated as champion in Division III, easily outdistancing second-place John Curtis 263.5-202.

It is the first time in Shaw school history that an athletics team has repeated as state champion in any sport, according to head coach Brandon Surrency.

“I am extremely proud of these young men,” Surrency said. “They worked hard and reached their full potential. It is awesome to have won two straight titles. Things are really going well at Shaw in athletics and our enrollment is increasing significantly. It is great to be part of it.”

Capturing state titles for the Eagles were Jayden Jamison (113), Giovani Malta (126), Carson Dalton (132) and Jayden Chapman (165).

John Curtis Christian finished second for the first time since 2012 and had a state champion in Brandon Dang (285).

De La Salle finished fifth and had three state champions. Dylan Duvernay (120) repeated as a state champion, pinning Blake Andre in the title match while Michael Benetrix (150),Austin Young (285) also won for the Cavaliers.

North DeSoto wrestled away the crown from the dynasty of Teurlings Catholic to win the Division II championship. It is the first state championship for the Griffins, who’s closest competitor is nearly 30 minutes away (Byrd). The Griffins have to travel frequently to face opponents and practice at an elementary school.

North DeSoto totaled 326 points to 297 for Teurlings Catholic.

“We worked really hard,” Griffins head coach Dustin Burton said. “Those kids, those parents, the community all bought in. We’re thankful and grateful to have what we have. All the guys did well. Chase Smart came through for us and they all did a great job. I’m so excited for them and we have many good wrestlers coming back. I’m super excited about winning and for all involved.”

North DeSoto had four state champions, including Dalton Compton (144) who repeated as a state champion. He was joined by Hayden Bell (150), Chase Smart (157) and Caiden Burns (285).

The Rebels had a tournament-best six winners, the most of any team in the meet. They included Alex Rozas (120), who repeated as a winner. He was joined by Brennan Boyer (132), Braeden Simoneaux (165), Carter Macha (175), Pike Landry (190) and KJ James (215).

Archbishop Rummel finished third and the Raiders won three titles, including Landon Modica (106), Dominick Durham (113) and Kaiden Triche (126).

Teurlings had won four straight titles and 10 of the last 11 in the division.

For North DeSoto is the first-ever title in program history for a school whose closest competitor in north Louisiana is nearly 23 miles away.

The Most Outstanding Wrestlers included Kristian Scott of Catholic (132) in Division I, who defeated Jesuit’s J.P. Webre 5-2 for the title, Pike Landry (190) of Teurlings Catholic in Division II, who pinned Caden Robison of North DeSoto in the title match and Konner Burch (175) of Springfield, who pinned Da’Shawn Randell of Basile for the title.
