WESTWEGO – In boxing parlance, it was round one of a three-round battle.

With Jesuit and Rummel scheduled to meet twice in District 9-5A play beginning in Metairie next Saturday, the two rivals hooked up in the final of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic State bracket championship game Saturday at the Alario Center.

The two sides who reflect each other in approach and stature battled in rugged fashion, struggling to score in a down and dirty battle and in the end, the Blue Jays emerged victorious 38-37 to win the title in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com.

Neither team shot the ball well.

Jesuit struggled with turnovers, committing 20 but the Blue Jays dominated on the boards by a 25-13 margin, including several offensive rebounds.

The Blue Jays started well, taking a 14-9 first quarter lead and expanded that edge to 24-15 halftime, stifling Rummel with a 3-2 zone defense as the Raiders struggled from the field.

The third quarter was a different story as Rummel increased its intensity on both ends of the floor and opened the period on a 10-0 run to take a 25-24 le3ad before the Raiders carried a 31-29 edge into the final quarter.

Jesuit (14-5) then clamped down on defense and the Blue Jays went on a decisive 7-0 run to take a 38-32 lead and held on the for victory.

Josh Washington led Jesuit with 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks and was named the Most Valuable Player while Jude Laforge added 10 points and four rebounds and Jack Lo had nine points and four rebounds.

TJ Duhe led the Raiders (13-5) with 15 points and five steals while Ja’Mard Jones had eight points.

The familiarity produced a bit of an ugly affair which looked quite attractive at game’s end for the Blue Jays.

The Raiders will get their chance at revenge in Metairie next Saturday.
