Holy Cross tops Salmen on lanes

Holy Cross used its depth to defeat Salmen 20-7 in a high school bowling match Thursday at Bowling USA in Slidell.

The Tigers won 10 of 12 matches in the Nos. 1-4 spots in the lineup. Adam Popich, Trevan Burns and Carter Holmes each swept three matches.

The teams split the six singles matches in game one, but Holy Cross took a 5-3 lead by virtue of a 51-pin edge in total pins. Salmen’s Devairr McLaughlin had a 202 in the opening game.

The Tigers took control by winning seven of eight points in game two. Gavin Mays led Holy Cross with a 186 game.

Burns’ 217 and Popich’s 211 led Holy Cross in game three, but Salmen’s Sara Howell turned in the day’s high game with a career-best 269 in the finale.

Howell, a Louisiana Tech signee, led all bowlers with a 651 series. McLaughlin had a 590 and won all three of his matches.

Mays led Holy Cross with a 538, while Popich had a 522.
