Girls Basketball: St. Thomas Aquinas, Newman advance to state semifinals

Fifth-seed St. Thomas Aquinas is in the Division III final four.

The Falcons went to Alexandria and whipped No. 4 Holy Savior Menard 60-46.

The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Falcons went on an 11-0 run and took control at 11-7 after one quarter. St. Thomas Aquinas led 25-21 at halftime. After the Eagles tied the game at 30-30, St. Thomas Aquinas went on a decisive 12-0 run to close the third quarter to take a 42-30 lead and were never threatened.

Sophia Geisler led the Lady Falcons with 22 points, Catherine Lemonte scored 18 and Breanna Becerra scored 16 points.

Marilyn Seeling led Holy Savior Menard with 28 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas (16-10) will play top seed Lafayette Christian in the semifinals at the Alario Center in Westwego Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Lady Knights dismissed No. 8 St. Mary’s Academy 91-29.

Also in Division III, No. 3 Newman is heading to Westwego after defeating No. 6 St. Charles Catholic 56-46.

Sophomore Talia Parnes led Newman with 24 points while sophomore Anaya Yunusah had 11 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Sanaa Bean had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Mya Brown led the Lady Comets with 18 points while Kaitlyn Abair finished with 16 points.

Newman (23-3) will make its first semifinal appearance in school history, according to coach Tracy Blackerby. The Greenies will play Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. against the winner of today’s matchup pitting Dunham at Episcopal.

In Division I, No. 7 St. Joseph’s Academy shocked No. 2 Dominican 54-52 in overtime.

In the Division II quarterfinals, No. 1 seed St. Louis Catholic eliminated No. 8 De La Salle 83-46.
