Girls Basketball Championships: Amite wins to reach third straight final

LHSAA Girls State Championship game report for Thursday, Feb. 29

Amite has been a power, the best in class overall over the last few years.

The Warriors remain at that elite level.

The second-seeded Warriors have advanced to a third straight state championship game, fighting off No. 3 Doyle 52-44 in the LHSAA Non-Select Division III semifinals Wednesday night at University Center in Hammond.

Amite established the edge immediately, jumping out to a 12-0 lead and maintained a slight edge throughout, leading 19-7 after one quarter and 31-24 at halftime.

It was a dynamic duo getting the job done for the Warriors. Hai’ley Brumfield led the way for Amite with 21 points and five assists while Miracle Irving scored 20 points, including 16 in the first half.

Kylee Savant topped the Tigers (30-5) with 17 points while Suri Stewart scored 11 points.

Amite (28-5) advances to face defending state champion Rosepine in the title game Saturday at 8 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s title game.

The Eagles held off No. 4 Westlake 55-48.

Addison Fruge led Rosepine with 22 points and seven rebounds, Kailea Blankenbaker scored 10 points and Kelly Norris scored eight points with 17 rebounds and 11 assists in a terrific performance.

Maddy Guillory topped Westlake (24-6) with 16 points, Gabby Guillory scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and Tierra Bargeman had 11 points.

Rosepine defeated Amite 69-61 in last year’s title game.

Amite will be in search of a sixth state title.

In Non-Select Division II, top seed and two-time defending state champion Wossman held off No. 4 Albany 51-46.

The Wildcats defeated Albany 63-43 in the title game a year ago.

Wossman will meet No. 2 South Beauregard in the title game Saturday at 4 p.m.

South Beauregard whipped No. 6 Church Point 60-39.

The game was tied early at 11-11 after one quarter but the Knights (27-7) took over in the second quarter and steadily pulled away.

Kenzie Hudler was a beast for South Beauregard, scoring 17 points with 16 rebounds. Kaelyn Gunter added 13 points and five assists while Emorie Fontenot had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Akirra Hagger had 12 points while Ery’ul Johnson scored 11 points to top the Bears.
