Gilroy Mustangs capture Louisiana Classic over second-place Jesuit

It is the most prestigious event in the state, outside of the state championship tournament next month in Bossier City.

While over 80 teams will compete in the state tournament Feb. 2-3, the 51st Louisiana Classic once again served as a good barometer of what to expect in the state tournament and this year’s event was certainly that with 57 teams competing at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center.

In the end, it was a loaded invader that took home the championship in Gonzales as Gilroy, California, coached by former USA wrestling star and UFC champion Daniel Cormier, dominated to win by a whopping 139.5 points.

The nation’s 11th-ranked team outdistanced defending Division I state champion Jesuit with Holy Cross third, Brother Martin fourth and North DeSoto fifth.

The Mustangs won 10 of the 14 weight classes with Moses Mendoza of Gilroy earning Most Outstanding Wrestler honors, winning at 126 pounds.

Michael Barnett of Jesuit was victorious at 106 pounds, Anthony Oubre of Holy Cross won at 113 pounds, Alex Rozas of Teurlings Catholic took first at 120 pounds and Jackson Calderaro of Jesuit was a winner at 215 pounds.

In a much anticipated match between a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers, Cody Merrill of Gilroy blanked Spencer Lanosga of Jesuit 5-0 at 285 pounds.
