Tulane coach Willie Fritz deflected any reports about his candidacy for the vacant coaching position at the University of Houston or any other job Monday.

“You kind of hope you’re in this position,” Fritz said on a video conference with media in advance of Saturday’s American Athletic Conference championship game with SMU. “It means you’re doing well.

“I’ll just take on the task at hand. The only thing I’m concerned about is the ballgame at 3:00 on Saturday.”

Houston, which just completed its first season in the Big 12 Conference after departing the AAC, is seeking a replacement for Dana Holgorsen, who was fired Sunday after a 4-8 season.
