Former Saints quarterback, NFL assistant Wade Wilson dead at age 60

Wade Wilson

Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Wade Wilson passed away Friday at age 60.

The Texas A&M Commerce product spent 19 seasons in the NFL, drafted in the eighth round by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1978 draft. After 11 years with Minnesota including a Pro Bowl season in 1988, Wilson spent a year with Atlanta before becoming the starter for the Saints in 1993. Following another season with New Orleans behind Jim Everett, Wilson joined the Cowboys for three seasons and Oakland for the final two of his career.

While in the Big Easy, Wilson beat out Steve Walsh for the starter’s role in 1993. He tossed for 2,457 yards, 12 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. After leading the Saints to a 5-0 start, Wilson and team faltered to a 8-8 finish under head coach Jim Mora.

Wilson served as a backup to Troy Aikman in Dallas, winners of Super Bowl XXX over the Steelers.

Following his playing career, Wilson served as quarterbacks coach with Dallas for two stints (2000-’02 and 2007-’17). In between, he held the same position with the Bears from 2004 to 2006.
