For a while, it looked like it would be an easy win, a walk in the park for Fisher Saturday against Ben Franklin at Hoss Memtsas Stadium.

It turned out to be anything but easy but the Gators got a much needed win, holding off the Falcons 21-15.

Fisher bolted out of the starting gate, racing to a 21-0 first quarter lead on the strength of touchdown runs by Lane Creppel, Isac Tamborella and quarterback Nickson Thibodaux. Tamborella also had a 45-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty on the Gators. Tamborella rushed 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown.

“We needed that one,” Cagins. “We jumped on them early and thought it would be a walk-through. We had adversity coming out of the half. The ball touched our gunner in the red zone, set them up, then we allowed a safety. It came down to the final minute and we were able to hold them off. Our defense held together to really win it for us.”

Creppel added an interception and eight tackles with two forced fumbles and a sack on defense and he finished with 14 carries for 70 yards with the touchdown run. Evan Phillips forced three fumbles for the Gators and Lance Defiore had 10 tackles.

Cagins reserved praise for one aspect of his kicking game as well.

“Our punter, Jose Hernandez handled a bad snap on a fourth-and-nine and scrambled for 25 yards and a first down. He flipped the field twice for us in the second half.”

Aaron Owens and Thomas Gross each scored a touchdown for the Falcons.

Fisher (1-1) returns to action next Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Northeast at Hoss Memtsas Stadium.

The Gators are seeking revenge after a very tough 14-13 loss at Northeast a year ago.

“Northeast is next and we will play with a chip on our shoulder,” Cagins said. “We lost on a 96-yard touchdown run on a scramble in the final minute to them last year. It was a bitter pill to swallow. We have to play well and finish this time around.”

Ben Franklin (0-2) will entertain St. Patrick (MS) next Friday at 6 p.m. on the Lakefront.
