Delgado splits Friday doubleheader against Chipola, Pensacola State

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Delgado split its Friday doubleheader in Pensacola, falling to #4 Chipola 4-3 in extra innings before rallying for a 5-0 victory over Pensacola State in the evening’s second game.

In game one, Chipola plated the game’s first run on a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. Delgado tied the game in the fourth when Ethan Lege singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on an infield error.

Chipola took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Victor Sanchez walked, stole second and scored on an infield error. Ethan Lege answered with a solo homerun in Delgado’s sixth to tie the game 2-2.

In the eighth, Cade Pregeant was placed on second base to start the extra inning, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a bases loaded walk by Ethan Lege.

In the bottom frame, Chipola’s Cesar Franco opened the inning on second base, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Zac Rice to tie the game at three.

Delgado left bases loaded in the ninth before a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning plated Tucker Flint for Chipola’s 4-3 win.

Carson Lore suffered the loss on the mound closing the final 6.2 innings in relief of starter Cory Cook.

In game two, Delgado plated four runs in the fifth inning, which started with three consecutive singles by Josh Alexander, Wil Spears, and Jake Fury.

Fury’s hit scored Alexander before Bryan Brousssard walked to load the bases. Brayden Caskey doubled to clear the bases before being thrown out at third base to end the inning.

In the sixth, Lane LeBlanc led off the inning with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Zach Mengarelli for the Dolphins’ fifth and final run enroute to a 5-0 shutout of the Pirates.

Hunter Draper pitched six innings, allowing no runs, four hits and striking out six before Will Reed closed the game in the seventh.

Delgado (10-4) will face Pensacola State at 11:00 Saturday, followed by a second game against Bishop State to close the weekend.
