De La Salle football

You can listen to what should be an excellent game at Joe Yenni Stadium pitting unbeaten De La Salle against Mississippi power Jefferson Davis County at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m. followed by the play-by-play call from Jude Young of Crescent City Sports and 106.1 FM, along with analysis by former De La Salle star Jonah Keller.

The Cavaliers (6-0) have been to three Division II state championship games since 2017. De La Salle has already beaten a Mississippi team in North Pike, and has wins over Holy Cross, St. Paul’s, defending Division III state champion St. Charles Catholic, East Ascension and Kenner Discovery.

Senior running back PJ Martin leads the way for the Cavaliers with 135 carries for 1,205 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with four catches for 83 yards.

Jefferson Davis County (5-2) is coming off a third straight victory, 35-14, over Seminary. The program at the relatively new school is known for its run-heavy Wing-T offense.

The Jaguars out of Bassfield, Mississippi have won three state championships since 2017. Head coach Lance Mancuso has been the head coach in the county since 2008. Rival schools Bassfield and Prentiss merged to become Jefferson Davis County High in 2016. Mancuso, who has won eight Mississippi state titles overall, coached Bassfield to four consecutive 2A crowns (2012-2015).
