With all due respect to those weighing in via the Louisiana Sportswriters Top 10 rankings in Louisiana, It is hard to fathom that there are six teams with similar records better than the Karr Cougars.

The Cougars have won 23 of their last 25 games, are the defending 4A state champions and have played in the state championship game six of the last seven years, also winning a state title in 2012.

Despite many key losses to graduation, Karr is an outstanding team again in 2017, losing only to De La Salle 28-26 when the Cougars failed on a two-point conversion late in the game after rallying from a 21-0 deficit.

From CrescentCitySports.com, there is much respect for the Cougars of Brice Brown as they ascend to the top spot in our weekly Top 10 rankings heading into a week six showdown with McDonogh 35 Thursday night at Tad Gormley Stadium. The Cougars were perhaps caught looking ahead last Friday, posting a ho-hum 34-20 win over Lake Area New Tech.

The Roneagles of Wayne Reese are now third, coming off of a solid 35-21 win at Carencro.

Defending Division II state champion St. Thomas More is up to second after blasting Franklinton 58-16. Warren Easton is a close fourth after a tough 27-21 loss to powerful John Curtis Christian. Unbeaten Benton has been very impressive and is fifth. Unbeaten Lakeshore is sixth with Neville falling to seventh after a loss to West Monroe. Plaquemine is eighth, with Rayne ninth and Woodlawn of Shreveport moving in at No. 10.

West Monroe remains the top team in 5A after handling Neville. There are no changes in the top tier with defending Division I state champion Evangel second, John Curtis Christian third and Rummel fourth. Acadiana is fifth after a big win over Barbe with unbeaten Scotlandville, Covington and St. Amant occupying the next three spots. Barbe is now ninth with Catholic of Baton Rouge tenth.

De La Salle remains on top in 3A with University a very close second. The two teams have to be considered virtual equals, at this stage, with very impressive resumes. Sterlington moves up to third after beating Calvary Baptist with West Feliciana fourth and unbeaten Jena up to No. 5. Battered St. Charles Catholic falls to sixth with Iowa seventh. St. James falls to eighth after losing to St. Amant with Archbishop Hannan ninth and Union Parish now tenth.

In 2A, Notre Dame is solid in the top spot with Amite second. Catholic of New Iberia is third with unbeatens Welsh, Ferriday, Newman and Mangham next up. Defending Division III state champion Riverside falls to eighth, Many is ninth and St. Helena moves in at No. 10.

Defending state champion Logansport is the top-ranked team in 1A with Kentwood second and Haynesville third. Oak Grove is fourth with Ouachita Christian fifth. West St. John is sixth with unbeatens Lafayette Christian, Elton, Ascension Catholic and Cedar Creek rounding out the top ten.
