HARVEY- John Ehret and Chalmette waged war in a key District 8-5A battle for the upper hand in the district.

The Patriots had reeled off four straight wins and were looking to get another one on Homecoming. The Owls wanted to stay in track for their second district title in three seasons.

The latter was a mission well accomplished.

Chalmette responded from a two-score deficit and made critical plays in a 21-12 victory Thursday night at Hoss Menmtsas Stadium.

Chalmette (7-1, 2-0) bounced back from consecutive Ehret touchdowns in the second quarter to overtime a 12-0 Patriots lead. A 62 drive on six plays was capped when Ethan Couvillion found Jaden Lapeyrouse for a 28-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to 12-7.

To close out the half, the Owls gained momentum and the lead. Jaden Williams hauled in a 23-yard pass to the one yard line. Then Couvillion hit Aston Lopez for a one-yard touchdown at the buzzer giving Chalmette a 14-12 edge at the half.

“We had to throw the ball. We ran an inside fade to Jaden Williams who made an amazing catch. Then I threw to Lopez in the end zone that gave us a lot of momentum at the half,” said Couvillion. “We knew we had to score again and occupy the clock. We couldn’t go into the 2nd half thinking we already won the game. We had to push through and get in the end zone. Everybody worked hard this week to get the win.”

Chalmette went on a devastating 92 yard drive on 13 plays, burning 6:24 in the third quarter. Lopez scampered for an eight-yard touchdown to make it 21-12.

While the Owls were stiff defensively, Ehret had one more chance in the fourth quarter to cut the lead but O’Quinn was intercepted by Chalmette’s Tyler Watson to put the game out of reach.

Chalmette had over 300 yards of total offense. Lopez led the Owls with 21 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Couvillion finished 11-of-22 passing for 143 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

“We tried to get the skill guys the ball in space and let them make plays. John Ehret has great coaches and great players. Our kids knew that we had to match their speed, play with high intensity and make those plays. We won some of those 50/50 balls tonight and that made a difference in the outcome,” said Chalmette Head Coach Jason Tucker. “We got some big guys up front and we turn it over to them. We’re battle tested and we’re senior laden. We have 27 seniors that’s been here before and they really wanted this.”

O’Quinn led the Patriots with 6-of-12 passes for 98 yards plus 10 carries for 68 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Early on, it looked like a happy Homecoming night for the Patriots.

After a scoreless first quarter, Ehret (4-4, 1-1) got things going when Darnell O’Quinn connected with Raymond Lain for 42 yards to the Chalmette seven yard line. O’Quinn finished the drive with a seven-yard touchdown giving the Patriots an early 6-0 lead.

The Ehret defense made a big stop to set up another score. Jayden Williams stuffed a run on 4th down and 2 at the Chalmette 38-yard line. The Patriots took advantage of the field position immediately with a 38-yard touchdown run by Damien Smith, extending the lead to 12-0.

“We didn’t take opportunities for ourselves to score. It’s 50/50 and you wonder if I do or I don’t but it put us in a bad spot,” said John Ehret Head Coach Reggie Rodgers. “That’s ball control and that’s how they play. We still had opportunities but we didn’t connect on the passes and missed a few touchdowns. They did a great job and congratulations to Chalmette.”

John Ehret will be looking to bounce back on the road in district play against East Jefferson next Friday night at Joe Yenni Stadium. Chalmette will continue their quest to sweep 8-5A on the road against Bonnabel next Saturday at Joe Yenni Stadium.
