Catholic of Baton Rouge and Ascension Catholic are terrific football teams that could very well win state championships this season.

While Catholic remained unbeaten and continues to impress, unbeaten Archbishop Rummel did something that very few teams do by defeating John Curtis Christian, snapping a 21-game win streak for the Patriots and snapped a 23-game district win streak in the Catholic League dating back to 2015 when Archbishop Rummel beat the Patriots 21-14 on Oct. 23, 2015.

The Raiders would go on to beat Curtis in the state playoffs that year as well before the Patriots turned things around and won straight against Rummel, prior to this past Friday night when the Raiders prevailed 21-20 in an overtime thriller in the game of the year in the state, thus far.

As a result, Rummel ascends to the No. 1 spot in our Class 5A CrescentCitySports.com statewide rankings edging out the Bears with Curtis dropping to third. West Monroe remains fourth and impressive Acadiana is fifth. Alexandria, Captain Shreve, Zachary and Brother Martin all move up a spot while Hahnville drops to tenth after suffering its first loss to Jesuit.

In 1A, Ascension Catholic continues to roll in impressive fashion but the most eye-opening victory of the season jumps unbeaten Calvary Baptist to the top spot.

The Cavaliers went to traditional power Haynesville and not only won but destroyed the Golden Tors 70-0 in a shocking result. Ascension Catholic is a close second with Ouachita Christian third and Vermilion Catholic fourth. Oberlin remained unbeaten to stay fifth with Oak Grove sixth. Southern Lab is seventh with Catholic of Pointe Coupee eighth. West St. John is ninth with Opelousas Catholic tenth.

Unbeaten Lakeshore took care of Pearl River in a big district game to remain on top in 4A with Karr second after an impressive win over Belle Chasse. St. Thomas More is a solid third with Neville fourth after a big win over Bastrop, who remains fifth. Assumption is sixth after a thrilling overtime win over Vandebilt Catholic with Westgate seventh. Evangel Christian is now eighth with Carencro falling to ninth and Eunice is tenth.

In Class 3A, St. James continues to roll and the unbeaten Wildcats are still No. 1. Sterlington is still second and very good. Unbeaten Loranger posted another 1-point win to remain unbeaten and is still third. Madison Prep is fourth with Church Point now fifth. Caldwell Parish moves up to sixth with University High seventh and De La Salle eighth. Carroll is ninth after a big win over Union Parish and Marksville returns to the rankings at No. 10.
