Boys Basketball Playoffs: Shaw, Carver, Newman, Crescent City, St. Martin’s earn semifinal spots

Six area teams have advanced to Marsh Madness and the LHSAA boys prep basketball semifinals in Lake Charles next week.

In Non-Select Division I, No. 2 seed and defending state champion Ponchatoula hammered District 6-5A rival Slidell 95-64 at home.

In Non-Select Division II, No. 2 Wossman ended the season of No. 10 Lakeshore, winning 93-62 at home. With the win, Wossman is on to the semifinals for a ninth straight year, searching for its first title in that span.

In Select Division I, No. 4 Pineville edged No. 5 Karr 46-45 in Central Louisiana.

Kylan Edwards knocked down the game-winning shot with 24 seconds left from 18 feet.

Karr had one last shot but could not get off a shot in time at the buzzer.

Edwards led the Rebels with 16 points while Malik Marzett scored eight points.

Pineville moves on to the semifinals of the state tournament for the first time since 1990.

In Select Division II, No. 1 Madison Prep eliminated No. 8 Archbishop Hannan 57-48.

The Chargers overcame a 3-point halftime deficit for the win.

Jayce Depron led Madison Prep with 16 points, Josh Smith scored 12 points and Donnie Haney finished with 10 points. Drew Timmons topped the Hawks (16-8) with 22 points.

Madison Prep (25-2) advances to the semifinals in Lake Charles to face a rematch with No. 4 Archbishop Shaw.

The Eagles edged No. 5 St. Michael 45-43 in Marrero to advance to the semifinals for a third straight season.

Shaw survived a fourth quarter rally by St. Michael to post the win.

The Warriors led 10-9 after one quarter before Shaw took a 22-17 halftime lead. The Eagles expanded the advantage to 36-25 heading to the fourth quarter before holding on for the victory.

Christian Creppel, who finished with nine points, made three free throws down the stretch to help secure the win. Xavier Meyers led Shaw with 16 points.

Sean Brown topped the Warriors with 16 points while Hayden Bessonet finished with 11 points.

Madison Prep downed Shaw 46-28 in last year’s semifinal matchup.

Two-time defending state champion and No. 3 seed Carver whipped No. 6 Lafayette Christian 54-37 at home to earn a fifth straight trip to the semifinals.

The Rams controlled play from the start, taking an 8-3 lead after one quarter and a 19-10 halftime lead. It was 38-25 after three quarters.

Daijon Leatherman pumped in 22 points while Laurence Nathan finished with 17 to pace the Rams.

Tulane signee Kam Williams scored 13 points and Morgan Collins finished with 11 points for the Knights.

Carver (24-9) will meet No. 2 Peabody in the semifinals in a rematch of last year’s semifinal thriller in Lake Charles, won by Carver 46-44.

The Warhorses advanced with a 60-50 win over No. 7 L.B. Landry.

Peabody led 11-7 after one quarter and 27-15 at halftime. It was 38-28 heading to the final quarter and Peabody maintained its margin for the win.

In Select Division III, top-seed and two-time defending state champion Newman downed District 10-2A rival Country Day 46-25 at home to advance to the semifinals for a fifth straight year.

Newman used its length and athleticism to stifle the smaller Cajuns all night, shutting out Country Day to take a 6-0 first quarter lead and allowed just two points in the entire first half, taking a 16-2 halftime lead. It was 32-7 heading to the final quarter.

Todd Jones led the Greenies with 14 points while Randy Livingston Jr. finished with 10 points. Kellen Brewer topped Country Day (18-13) with seven points.

Newman (18-10) advances to the semifinals in Lake Charles to take on No. 13 Episcopal.

The Knights upset No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas 76-61.

No. 2 Dunham eliminated No. 7 St. Charles Catholic 42-36 in Baton Rouge.

In Select Division IV, No. 1 seed Crescent City Christian is heading to Lake Charles after a convincing 73-45 win over No. 8 St. Frederick.

Jovanni Perez led the Pios with 26 points, Dwight Magee scored 25 and Isaiah Stevens finished with 16 points.

The Pioneers (23-5) will take on No. 5 Lincoln Prep in the semifinals, who beat No. 4 St. Mary’s 40-38.

No. 2 seed St. Martin’s Episcopal is on to the semifinals as well after the Saints defeated No. 10 Westminster Christian 57-50 at home. Jophie Laforge and Matt Weaver led the Saints wit 19 points each.

St. Martin’s (24-6) will face No. 6 Hamilton Christian, who upset No. 3 Southern Lab 57-49.
