Boys Basketball Playoffs: Jesuit, St. Aug, Sarah Reed advance

Boys Prep Basketball Playoff Report for Friday, Feb. 23

No. 9 seed Jesuit advanced, extacting revenge against District 9-5A rival and No. 24 seed Holy Cross with a 73-47 win Thursday night at Gayle & Tom Benson Arena.

Holy Cross had beaten Jesuit at the same location by a 62-46 margin a week ago.

Jesuit (24-6) advances to play at No. 8 Alexandria in the regional round.

No. 12 St. Augustine was impressive in a 56-36 win over No. 21 Tioga at Holy Cross.

The Purple Knights put the game away with an impressive fourth quarter, outscoring the Indians 19-8 in the final quarter.

St. Augustine took control from the start and led 24-14 at halftime. It was 37-28 heading to the final quarter.

Josh Jackson scored 12 points for the Purple Knights while Cy Merrett and Air Force signee Turner Duncan each added eight points.

CJ Thomas topped Tioga with 15 points.

St. Augustine (21-10) advances to face a familiar opponent in 9-5A rival Karr next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Karr. The Cougars won both regular season matchups with the Purple Knights by 47-38 and 40-36 margins.

In Select Division III, No. 14 Sarah Reed downed No. 19 Notre Dame 39-24 at home to advance. It was the first-ever playoff win for the Olympians.

Dontroy Thorne led the way with 21 points, six assists, seven rebounds and four blocks. Kirt Riley had 10 points and four rebounds. Ky’lil Wilson scored nine points with seven rebounds and Pernell Watt had seven points, six steals and five rebounds.

The Olympians (26-7) advance to take on No. 4 University Lab next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Baton Rouge.

No. 13 Episcopal eliminated No. 19 Northlake Christian 82-54.
