Boys Basketball Playoffs: Hannan, Northlake Christian, St. Thomas Aquinas, Country Day advance with wins

Boys Prep Basketball Playoff Report for Wednesday, Feb. 23

Four area teams advanced with victories Tuesday night.

In the Division II regional round, third seed Archbishop Hannan handled No. 14 Lusher Charter 67-34.

Hannan controlled play from the start, taking a 24-8 lead after one quarter and growing the edge to 44-14 at halftime before coasting to victory in the second half.

Senior Grant Kemp led the way for the Hawks with 18 points while Drew Timmons scored 13 points. Samajai McClendon added nine points.

Jacoby Soraporu was a one-man gang for the Lions (13-18), scoring 25 points.

The Hawks (24-8) advance to the quarterfinals to meet the winner of tonight’s game between No. 11 E.D. White Catholic and No. 6 Evangel Christian.

In Division III, No. 6 Northlake Christian handled No. 11 St. Charles Catholic 57-34.

Collier Waldmann led the Wolverines with 17 points while Zach Staten scored 15 points. Torin Bell and Gabe Smith each scored eight points.

Northlake Christian (14-13) advances to play at District 10-2A rival and No. 4 seed St. Thomas Aquinas Friday.

The Falcons downed No. 13 Houma Christian 71-51.

STA led 20-16 after one quarter before opening the second quarter on an 11-0 run which proved decisive as the Falcons carried a solid 40-22 lead into halftime. It was 58-38 going to the final quarter.

Kendrell Perry led St. Thomas Aquinas (21-9) with 21 points while Jake Berner and Darius Vaughn each scored 11 points. Cace Reed scored nine points and Chase Daigle finished with eight points.

St. Thomas Aquinas downed Northlake Christian 70-44 at home on Feb. 1.

In Division IV, No. 3 Country Day had no problem with No. 14 Westminster Christian, winning 80-52.

The Cajuns (19-10) advance to the quarterfinals to meet the winner of this evening’s contest pitting No. 11 St. Frederick at No. 6 St. Martin’s Episcopal at 6:30 p.m.
