Boys Basketball Playoff Report: Landry-Walker, Slidell, Bonnabel advance in Class 5A opening round

Third-seed Landry-Walker opened defense of its Class 5A state championship with a solid 79-60 win over 30th-seeded and District 8-5A rival West Jefferson on Friday evening.
The Chargin’ Bucs took control from the start, bolting out to a 22-7 lead after one quarter and blew the game open in the second quarter to take a 42-16 lead by halftime. It was 59-34 after three quarters.
Senior Semaj Matthews led Landry-Walker (24-6) in scoring with 23 points but it was junior Dywan Griffin who stole the show. Griffin had a triple-double, embracing the No. 11 with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Chargin’ Bucs. Shadon Green added 13 points.
Dajour Lloyd topped the Buccaneers (13-17) with 14 points while Tony White and Tremell Withrow each finished with 11 points.
Landry-Walker defeated West Jefferson 75-58 on Jan 23 in district play.
The Chargin’ Bucs advance to the regional round to travel to 19th-seed Dutchtown. The Griffins upset 14th-seed Lafayette 55-37 on the road.
Also in 5A, 11th-seed Slidell fought off 22nd-seed East St. John 61-57 at Slidell.
In a close game throughout, the Wildcats led 23-22 after one quarter before Slidell took a 33-31 lead by halftime. The Tigers led 45-42 after three quarters.
Eddie Thomas topped the Tigers (24-9) with 19 points. Tyler Harris scored 12 and Jonathan Merriman finished with 10 points. Javon Antonio, Brandon Davis and Allen Williams each had 16 points to top the Wildcats (15-13).
Slidell advances to play at sixth-seed H.L. Bourgeois in the regional round. The Braves edged 27th-seed LaGrange 64-61.
Seventh-seed Bonnabel held off a stiff upset challenge to edge 26th-seed Live Oak 73-70 in Kenner.
The Bruins controlled play in the first half, taking a 21-14 lead after one quarter and a 47-30 lead by halftime. The Eagles stormed back in the second half cutting the deficit to 54-44 after three quarters
Guard T.J. Collins led Bonnabel (25-5) with 24 points and eight rebounds. Rodney Munson added 19 points while Theo Johnson had 11. Bryan Bayonne topped Live Oak (18-14) with 22 points, Dearron Capling had 20 and Lawrence Pierre finished with 16 points for the Eagles.
Bonnabel advances to entertain 10th-seed Thibodaux in the regional round. The Tigers whipped 23rd-seed Acadiana 79-56.
