Boys Basketball: Newman, Country Day to square off for district crown; Warren Easton clinches playoff spot

Area Boys Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Feb. 16

The two top teams in the upcoming Select Division III boys basketball state playoffs will be Newman and Country Day.

The district rivals could very well meet in the state championship game in March.

First, they will meet Friday.

It will be Newman and Country Day in the final of the District 10-2A tournament at Country Day.

The Greenies continued to roll, blasting St. Charles Catholic 72-35 for their sixth straight win.

Newman dominated from the start and never let up.

Chris Lockett led the Greenies with 18 points, Canin Jefferson scored 17 and Todd Jones finished with 14 points.

Newman (27-6) will face Country Day at 5 p.m. Friday for the district title.

Country Day fought off M.L. King Charter 53-47 for its sixth straight win.

The Cajuns took an 18-10 lead after one quarter and bolted to a solid 33-16 halftime lead but the Jaguars battled back, cutting the deficit to 46-36 after three quarters and drawing closer in the fourth quarter before falling.

The Cajuns were strong from distance, sinking nine 3-pointers.

Andrew Nelson led Country Day (24-6) with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, Jordan Trahan scored 12 points and Brennan White scored 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Dannell Franklin topped M.L. King Charter ( with 12 points, Chris Doyle scored 11 and David Webb and Daurance Allen each added 10 points.

In a non-district contest, Warren Easton went to John F. Kennedy and downed the Cougars 58-53, an important victory in playoff positioning.

It was tied 15-15 after one quarter before Kennedy took a 28-25 halftime lead. The Eagles dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 22-11 to take a 47-39 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Kennedy pulled within three points in the final minute but could get no closer.

Kentrell Fulton starred for Warren Easton, scoring 26 points while Dunstan Weaver added 15 points.

Kerry McMillian led John F. Kennedy with 15 points while Cornelius Brown added 13 points.

Warren Easton (17-10), currently 21st in the Select Division I power rankings, will host Northshore tonight at 7 p.m. in its regular season finale.

John F. Kennedy (22-11), currently 12th in the Select Division II power rankings, saw its eight-game win streak end in its final regular season contest.
