Boys Basketball: Bonnabel, Hahnville, Salmen, Carver, Wright advance to state quarterfinals

Local teams in the non-select regional boys basketball state playoffs Tuesday punched their tickets to the LHSAA quarterfinals.

In Class 5A, No. 4 Bonnabel fought off a stiff challenge from No. 13 East Ascension, winning 58-53 at The Trap in Kenner.

The Spartans jumped out early to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and maintained a 27-21 lead by halftime. The Bruins awakened in the third quarter, outscoring East Ascension 20-9 to take a 41-36 lead going to the final quarter.

East Ascension pulled within four points twice, including at 53-49 but could not catch Bonnabel.

Kyshoun James led the Bruins ( with 15 points, while Will Allen, Theo Johnson and Tyron Williams each scored 12 points.
Bonnabel advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 12 Zachary. The Broncos upset No. 5 Lafayette 57-53.

No. 10 Hahnville went on the road and overcame No. 7 Ponchatoula 59-49 in a game broadcast live at CrescentCitySports.com.

The Tigers (25-9) will travel to No. 2 Ouachita Parish in the quarterfinals. The Lions downed No. 15 Southwood 54-43. Ponchatoula ended its season 25-9.

In 4A, No. 7 Salmen downed No. 23 Warren Easton 56-50 at Easton.

In a close game throughout, the Eagles led 12-10 after one quarter before the Spartans took a 24-21 lead by halftime. It was 37-36 Salmen going to the final quarter.

Devon Lizana was outstanding for Salmen, scoring 29 points while Jaden Williams added 14. Casey Cain had 15 points while Dante Stokes had 10 for the Eagles (20-13).

Salmen (21-6) advances to play at No. 2 Breaux Bridge Friday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Breaux Bridge went on the road and dismissed No. 18 Ellender 68-57.

Also in 4A, No. 6 Carver, which cannot play a home game in the playoffs, went to Shreveport and defeated No. 11 Booker T. Washington of Shreveport 61-49. The Rams will travel back to Shreveport to face No. 3 Huntington in the quarterfinals. Huntington whipped No. 14 Plaquemine 72-56.

In 3A, No. 11 Sophie B. Wright went on the road and upset No. 6 Jena 58-47.

The Giants led 14-13 after one quarter and maintained a 25-23 lead by halftime. The Warriors took over in the second half, outscoring Jena 16-9 in the third quarter to take a 39-34 before winning the fourth quarter 19-13 for the win.

Sophie B. Wright (21-10) will travel to five-time defending state champion and No. 3 seed Madison Prep in the quarterfinals. Madison Prep blasted No. 14 Iowa 88-53.
