Bonnabel has turned to an experienced head coach to take over its program.

Brett Bonnaffons is the new head coach of the Bruins.

The Jaguars were 6-15 in the two seasons under Bonnaffons, losing in the opening round of the Division III playoffs to Dunham this past season. At Riverdale, Bonnaffons guided the Rebels to a 9-12 mark over two seasons.

Bonnaffons previously served as the head coach at Riverdale and was an assistant coach at Helen Cox, West Jefferson, Desire Street Academy, Redemptorist, Carroll.

A Holy Cross graduate, Bonnaffons played collegiately at Nicholls State.

He becomes the third head coach in three years at Bonnabel.

Daryl Thomas resigned after one year on the job after former Bruin star player Reggie Rogers spent six years as head coach. Thomas made the move to become an assistant at Salmen under new Spartans head coach Eric Chuter to be closer to home. Thomas is a north shore resident.

“We have 31 players right now but hope to from that number,” Bonnaffons said. “We have 44 kids back from a year ago. I enjoy coaching. This is something I really love. We went from being really bad to being a playoff team at Riverdale. We improved the program at Pope John Paul II. I had a chance to coordinate another program but I love being a head coach.”

Bonnaffons feels he can restore the Bruins to a good football program, in time.

“We had a couple of good years here under Coach Rogers,” Bonnaffons said. “He is a heck of a coach and I want to build this to make him proud and other graduates proud. They had good men here. I want to make it a good place once again. We have 1,300 kids walking the halls here. There is no way we should have just 40 kids playing football. That is the biggest challenge, to get them to come out and play football. We are excited about the opportunity.
