NEW ORLEANS – Sometimes, the bigger picture matters.

Devoid of pitching and looking to give his seniors an opportunity, Karr head coach Donnie Russell approached Thursday’s District 9-4A contest with red hot Belle Chasse with an understanding that his Cougars would probably lose and possibly by a large margin.

The Cardinals saw to that, pummeling Karr 21-1 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium for their 18th consecutive victory, completing a series sweep of the Cougars.

“We had three guys that couldn’t throw today,” Russell said. “When you lose one, two and three because you’re trying to get into the playoffs and you are playing a quality team like Belle Chasse, it’s kind of tough to bounce back and play a good team like that. The kids wanted our seniors to play today. They wanted it. I granted it. I’m proud of the kids and the way they competed. The three kids who pitched have not pitched all year. We will bounce back from this.”

Belle Chasse edged Karr 3-2 on Tuesday in an eight-inning thriller at Hebert Park. This time around was quite different.

Brok D’Angelo was the star of stars for Belle Chasse (21-8, 8-0). D’Angelo reached base all five times, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI, scoring three times. He pitched three innings in relief to pick up the win, allowing a run on no hits, striking out six.

“The difference from last time is we came out ready to swing,” D’Angelo said. “Last game, we struggled to get our bats hot. This game, we were more ready for what they had. Everybody came out swinging and we got started quick. It was nice to drive in five runs. I was trying to save some pitching for us coming out of the bullpen and did what I could.”

Isaac Phillips had three hits and three RBI while Matt Barthelemy and Holden Dejean each added three RBI for Belle Chasse. Rylan Thayer pitched the first two innings and was perfect, striking out four before giving way to D’Angelo. The Cardinals held Karr without a hit while the Cougars committed five errors.

“It just depends on the district from game to game,” Belle Chasse head coach Josh Euper said. “We hit the ball a little better this game than we did the last one. I was glad to see us get some quality at-bats. We’re getting it together at the right time and doing some positive things. There’s always stuff to work on but we’re excited with where we’re at.”

The Cardinals jumped all over Karr in the top of the first inning as Thayer hit Barthelemy with a pitch and he stole second. D’Angelo singled, advancing Barthelemy to third. DeJean drove in Barthelemy with a field’s choice grounder to make it 1-0.

D’Angelo scored on an error to make it 2-0. After a single by Thayer, Phillips bunted perfectly on a safety squeeze for a hit and two runs scored to make it 4-0. Zack Drum drove in another run with another successful safety squeeze and it was 5-0. Barthelemy singled home a pair of runs to make it to 7-0. D’Angelo followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.

The Cardinals continued the scoring in the top of the second. Phillips singled, Drum walked, Eric Ragas was hit by a pitch for the second time and Barthelemy drew a walk, scoring Phillips to make it 9-0. A wild pitch scored Drum and it was 10-0. D’Angelo followed with a two-run double to center to make it 12-0. Another error made it 14-0.

D’Angelo continued the onslaught with a ringing two-run double to left in the top of the third off of Karr relief pitcher Trivez Pierre to make it 16-0 before DeJean followed with a sacrifice fly and it was 17-0. Mark Plaisance then doubled down the third base line, scoring D’Angelo and it was 18-0. Phillips doubled to right, scoring Plaisance and it was 19-0.

D’Angelo drove in his fifth run on a grounder in the fourth inning which was mishandled to make it 20-0. Cade Creppel followed with an RBI on a fielder’s choice to make it 21-0.

The Cougars averted the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Reginald Young drove in Donnell Sanchell, who was hit by a pitch, with an RBI groundout to make it 21-1.

Rasheed Rue went two innings, allowing 14 runs (six earned) on eight hits to take the loss. Pierre and Brian Simmons combined to pitch the final three innings for Karr.

“It’s exciting,” Euper said. “You work hard to put yourself in the best position that you can be in. So far, we’re doing that. We’re looking at one game at a time and we’ve got Pope John Paul tomorrow and we will try to take care of business there. Brok is the captain of the team. He always does everything we ask him to do.”

Belle Chasse looks to make it 19 straight Friday at 6 p.m. in Slidell against Pope John Paul II. Karr returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Patrick Taylor Academy at Perry Roehm Stadium.

“We are playing well,” D’Angelo said. “Our bats are hotter than ever, since I’ve been here. I feel pretty good about it. We have hot bats and great pitching. We are ready for the playoffs.”
