It has been stated many, many times in football.

Often times, the difference in a game decided by inches.

That was the case Friday night in Plaquemines Parish.

In an absolute thriller at home, Belle Chasse fought off Lakeshore 31-30 in overtime.

The Cardinals scored on the first possession of overtime and made the extra point to take a 31-24 lead.

Lakeshore then scored to make it 31-30 but missed the extra point, giving Belle Chasse the victory.

In overtime, Belle Chasse got the ball first and quarterback Tyler Dickson scored on a 5-yard run to make it 31-24 after the extra point by Trey Furey.

Lakeshore then got its chance and Jaden McCall hit James Young with a 14-yard touchdown pass. The Titans elected to go for the win.

First, Belle Chasse was offside, putting the ball at the 1 ½ yard line. Still, the Cardinals stopped the 2-point conversion attempt by McCall to hold on for a huge win.

The game was scoreless through one quarter before Belle Chasse jumped on top on a 22-yard run by Alfred Carter and it was 7-0 with 9:24 to play in the half.

Lakeshore got even on the ensuing possession on an 18-yard run by Mike Smith to make it 7-7.

Carter then connected with Kyron Ramsey on a 35-yard touchdown pass just before halftime to give the Cardinals a 14-7 lead.

Belle Chasse extended its lead to 21-7 in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Jaedon Voisin and looked to be in control at 21-7 going to the fourth quarter.

Then, the Titans staged a comeback.

First, McCall connected with Eli Lirette on a 20-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-14 with just under 11 minutes to play in the game.

The Lakeshore defense next came up huge as Jayden McClain recovered a fumble on a botched pitch play and raced 65 yards for a score to tie the game 21-21 with just over five minutes remaining.

Then, Belle Chasse got the drive it needed with Furey booting a 24-yard field goal to take a 24-21 lead with 1:06 to play but that was just enough time for Lakeshore to get even.

The Titans drove to the Belle Chasse 15-yard line and on the final play of regulation, Megyn Gettys calmly nailed a 32-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

On The Three Tailgaters Show on NASH ICON 106.1 FM Saturday morning, Belle Chasse coach Stephen Meyers stated the obvious.

“For the fans, it was it was a real good game,” Meyers said. “It was a close game the whole game. We got the stop we needed it. We got the penetration on the 2-point conversion by our linebackers.”

Belle Chasse lost starting quarterback Stone Meyers to a knee injury early in the season, resulting in surgery in the season and the Cardinals have overcome the loss.

“Tyler Dickson has done a great job,” Meyers said. “He took over in week two. He is tough. He wants to be on the field. We moved him from safety. We do what we have to do to win games. Our quarterback got hurt the first game. Albert Carter was the backup but he is our running back. Tyler took over the second week and has improved every week. He has about 700 yards rushing the last three weeks.”

McCall was excellent for Lakeshore, rushing for 65 yards and throwing for 160 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Dickson starred for Belle Chasse, rushing 26 times for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Belle Chasse (3-2) returns to District 10-4A play next Friday night against Helen Cox at 7 p.m. at Hoss Memtsas Stadium while Lakeshore (2-4) opens District 9-4A play at home at the Coliseum against Franklinton at 7 p.m.

“You have to find seven games with a four-team district,” Meyers said. “We get to play a lot of different teams from different places. This schedule this year has no gimmes. Every game is going to go to the wire. We have to be ready to play. We know Helen Cox is big and athletic. We scheduled according power points. We’ve won two straight. We’re getting better each week.”
