Basketball: St. Augustine and Bonnabel to meet in local tourney final, Shaw stays hot in New York

Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Dec. 29

Host St. Augustine and Bonnabel will meet for the championship of the Purple Knight Classic.

While conditions at St. Augustine were unplayable do to the floor condition at the St. Aug Gym, the Purple Knights simply moved to the McDonogh 35’s gym and did not miss a beat.

St. Aug handled Landry-Walker 59-41 to advance to the championship game.

The Purple Knights controlled play throughout, leading 21-12 after one quarter and widening the advantage to 35-18 by halftime before coasting in the second half.

Jaron Pierre led a balanced attack with 13 points while Jaden Clark and Ashton Trufant each scored 11 points as St. Augustine (15-1) won its 10th straight game. The Chargin’ Bucs (7-10) were led by Jaheim Walters, who scored 20 points.

Bonnabel advanced with a 54-46 victory over Carver.

The Rams led 11-10 after one quarter but Bonnabel dominated the second quarter to take a 22-15 lead by halftime. It was 37-27 going to the final quarter.

Jonathan Brock led the Bruins (11-4) with 17 points while Tyron Williams had 15 points.
Frederick Williams led Carver (14-5) with 20 points.

This will be the fourth meeting between St. Aug and Bonnabel already this season. The Purple Knights swept the first three meetings, winning by nine points twice and 11 points once.

In tournament play in New York, Archbishop Shaw made it five straight wins, defeating Salesian High of New York 60-40.

Rodney Philips topped the Eagles (12-4) with 19 points while Isaiah Barnes had 13 points for Shaw.

The Eagles return to action at home against French Settlement Thursday at 5 p.m.
