Basketball: St. Aug, Brother Martin, West Jeff, John Ehret earn district wins Tuesday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Feb. 9

St. Augustine is the defending Division I state basketball champion.

For much of the 2021-22 season, the Purple Knights have not looked the part, displaying stunning inconsistency.

Now, the Purple Knights are doing the stunning, at least in the Catholic League.

Hubert Caliste scored with 4.7 seconds remaining to lift St. Augustine to a thrilling 57-55 victory Tuesday evening
over Jesuit in District 9-5A play at Dillard’s Dent Hall.

St. Augustine led 13-12 after one quarter and maintained a 29-25 lead at halftime but the Blue Jays came out of the locker room hot and claimed a 42-38 lead going to the final quarter.

The win is the third straight and fourth in its last five league games for the resurgent Purple Knights.

Turner Duncan led St. Augustine with 15 points, Chris Landers scored 13 points, Josh Jackson finished with 11 points and Caliste added 10 points in a balanced effort.

Matthew Knight topped the Blue Jays with 22 points and eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his outstanding career.

Jasper Parker added 13 points while Michael Britsch finished with 11 points.

Both teams are back in district play Friday night. St. Augustine (10-21, 5-5) travels to Archbishop Shaw while the Blue Jays (17-10, 5-4) lost their third straight district game and will host Holy Cross.

Brother Martin rebounded from a tough loss to St. Augustine with a 47-30 victory over Holy Cross in District 9-5A action.

The Crusaders took control early, bolting out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter and led 31-15 at halftime. It was 43-24 going to the final quarter.

Jace Patin led the Crusaders with 15 points and seven rebounds, Ray Lotten had eight points and three rebounds, Parker Dinsdale scored seven points and Marvin Jones finished with six points and 12 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Both teams return to district play Friday night Brother Martin (21-6, 6-4) travels to John Curtis Christian while the Tigers (12-15, 2-6) visits rival Jesuit.

In District 8-5A, West Jefferson continues to roll.

The Buccaneers remained unbeaten in league play with a convincing 84-48 victory at home over Grace King for their 20th win of the season.

The win was the seventh straight for West Jefferson, ranked 25th in the latest LHAAA Class 5A power rankings.

Tarence Ross led the Buccaneers with 18 points, Korey Newman finished with 17 points, Daquan Royal scored 16 and Lunden Sample contributed 10 points.

Both teams return to district play Friday night. West Jefferson (20-11, 4-0) will travel to East Jefferson while Grace King (8-19, 0-4) has lost four straight games and will host Higgins.

Staying even at the top of the district with West Jefferson is West Bank neighbor and rival John Ehret.

The Patriots remained hot, winning 82-62 at Riverdale in a battle of unbeaten teams in district play for their seventh straight victory.

John Ehret led 17-14 after one quarter and 39-31 at halftime. The lead grew to 56-43 going to the final quarter.

Freshman Charlie Triggs Jr. came up big with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Patriots. Junior Montel Robinson had 20 points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Freshman Eddie McIntyre IV scored 18 points and had four assists and junior Kenyon Chirlow finished with nine points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Both teams return to action Friday night. The Patriots (15-8, 4-0) travel to Chalmette while the Rebels (11-7, 3-1) saw their six-game win streak end and will hit the road to Bonnabel.
