Crescent City Christian Basketball

One team to pay attention to closely this season is Sophie B. Wright.

The Warriors were a good team last year, reaching the Class 2A quarterfinals, but they are a better team this season.

That was again on display Monday night as the Warriors rallied past defending Division V state champion Crescent City Christian 64-58 in Metairie.

The Pioneers controlled the first half, leading 16-15 after one quarter and expanding the lead to 27-22 at halftime. Sophie B. Wright rallied to tie the game 41-41 after three quarters before outscoring Crescent City 23-17 in the final quarter for the win.

Charlie Russell led the way with 21 points, including 11 in the decisive fourth quarter, to lead the Warriors. Greg Hammond scored 16 points and D.J. Burns had 15 for Sophie B. Wright. Byron Joshua and Johnny Vaughn each had 12 points to top the Pioneers.

The Warriors (7-1) have lost only to Division III power Riverside. The Pioneers (7-6) have lost three straight, facing a brutal schedule.

Sophie B. Wright hits the road to face a tough McDonogh 35 squad Friday night while Crescent City hosts West Jefferson Wednesday evening.

In the top girls matchup this evening, unbeaten Slidell (6-0) travels to Fontainebleau (7-3) at 7 p.m. in the District 6-5A opener for both teams. The Lady Dawgs won their first seven games before dropping their last three.
