Basketball: Rummel, Brother Martin, Newman, STA earn tourney wins Wednesday

Archbishop Rummel scored a big win in a tournament in Virginia while Brother Martin, Newman and St. Thomas Aquinas were victorious in the Sunkist Shootout at St. Thomas More in Lafayette.

At the Lake Braddock Holiday Tournament at Burke, Virginia, Rummel scored a 59-48 victory over a very good St. Mary’s Ryken (Maryland) squad.

Rummel led 13-11 after one quarter but trailed 22-18 at halftime. The third quarter was decisive as the Raiders outscored St. Mary’s Ryken 24-12 to take a 42-34 lead heading to the final quarter.

Ja’Mard Jones led the Raiders with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists while TJ Duhe had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Denim Smith had seven points.

Rummel won the battle of the boards by a 34-27 margin.

The Raiders (9-6) will face Quinlan Gorman (Virginia) today.

In the Sunkist Shootout in Lafayette, Brother Martin handled Opelousas Catholic 68-42.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 21-8 lead after one quarter and led 38-22 by halftime. It was 55-34 heading to the fourth quarter.

Eli Pichon led Brother Martin (14-3) with 16 points while Parker Dinsdale scored 15 points. Chase Chesser had seven points and nine rebounds and Kevin Marinello finished with seven points.

Roderick Tezeno topped Opelousas Catholic with 21 points and seven rebounds and Dontre Henry had nine points and five rebounds.

Newman defeated Patterson 60-44.

The Greenies led 12-4 after one quarter and 19-14 at halftime. It was 42-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

Todd Jones led the Greenies (6-5) with 18 points and nine rebounds while Jackson Williams scored 15 points and Randy Livingston Jr. had 11 points and six rebounds.

Demond Davis led the Lumberjacks with 15 points and six rebounds while Carlos Brooks finished with 11 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Barbe 51-46.

The Falcons led 6-5 after one quarter and 19-16 at halftime. STA led 33-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

Kohen Rowbatham led St. Thomas Aquinas with 20 points and five rebounds while Kendrell Perry had nine points and Hunter Gambel finished with eight points.

Ben Golla led the Buccaneers with 16 points and Braylon Carter had 10 points and five rebounds.
