Basketball: Ponchatoula, Newman, Landry, SBW boys; Northshore, St. Katharine Drexel girls win Saturday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 28

As a defending state champion, Ponchatoula is a definite threat to repeat in 2024.

The Green Wave served notice of their vast ability once again Saturday and it was all about their star.

Santa Clara commit Allen Graves erupted for 31 points and 16 rebounds to pace Ponchatoula to a convincing 83-57 victory over traditional power Peabody in the Booker T. Washington Tournament.

Jeremiah Lewis scored 20 points while Taj Jackson added 19 points.

The Green Wave (20-4), fifth in the nonselect Division I power ratings, return to action Tuesday in District 6-5A play at Slidell.

The Warhorses (23-5), second in the Select Division II power ratings, will play at Neville next Friday.

The Newman boys downed Crescent City Christian 65-49 Saturday at Booker T. Washington.

Newman led 13-9 after one quarter and 30-20 at halftime.

Todd Jones, Chris Cenac and Chris Burden each scored 15 points and RJ Livingston scored 12 points for the Greenies while Dwight Magee led the Pioneers with 20 points and Jovanni Perez added 15 points.

Newman (11-10) returns to action Tuesday, hosting Liberty.

The Pioneers (17-8) return to District 10-1A action Tuesday at St. Martin’s Episcopal.

Also at Booker T. Washington, Landry handled John F. Kennedy 56-39.

Landry took control in the first quarter and built a 30-19 halftime lead and maintained it the rest of the way.

Daryl Adams led the Buccaneers with 25 points.

Landry (19-8) will next Friday at 6 p.m. in District 10-4A action.

The Cougars (14-10) saw their seven-game win streak end and will next play at Morris Jeff Tuesday in a District 9-3A contest at 6:15 p.m.

Sophie B. Wright edged Douglass 51-47.

The Warriors led 11-10 after one quarter before the Bobcats took a 25-22 halftime lead. Douglass still led 36-35 heading to the fourth quarter before the Warriors rallied for the win.

Davonte Landry led Sophie B. Wright with 25 points while Jacorey Washington had 12 points. Tommy Hilliard led Douglass with 22 points while Jermaine Bias Jr. finished with nine points.

Sophie B. Wright (18-9) will host Phoenix Monday at 5:30 p.m.

The Bobcats (11-13) will play at Warren Easton Monday at 7 p.m.

Coming off a tough district loss to Fontainebleau, following a big win over Ponchatoula, the Northshore girls had little time to recover, facing cross-town rival Salmen at home Saturday evening.

After trailing early, the Lady Panthers awakened and overcame the Spartans 54-41.

Salman led 9-6 after one quarter and 16-14 at halftime. Northshore was a different team in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 40-25 in the final two quarters for the win.

Junior Cherie Spencer continued her brilliant season, pumping in 34 points while Alanna Jackson had 17 points. Destiny Bennett and Parish Powell each had 10 points for the Spartans.

Northshore (17-12) will host Karr on Wednesday.

Salmen (12-14) returns to District 8-4A play Tuesday at St. Scholastica.

St. Katharine Drexel handled Lycee Francais de la Nouvelle Orleans 40-9.

The Yellowjackets pitched a shutout in the first half, leading 11-0 after one quarter and 21-0 at halftime. It was 36-6 heading to the fourth quarter.

Junior Jaquel Angrum led St. Katharine Drexel with 16 points while junior Jewlrie Douglass had seven points and five steals. Caitlin Smith had six points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

The Yellowjackets (4-13) return to action at Sophie B. Wright Monday.

Lycee Francais de la Nouvelle Orleans (2-9) will host Cohen Tuesday.
