Basketball: Newman edges Central Lafourche, Mandeville girls win at Albany

Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Dec. 2

Tough games make teams tougher down the road.

For a youthful, but talented and growing Newman squad, that was certainly the case Tuesday evening in uptown New Orleans.

The Greenies remained unbeaten, fighting off a stiff challenge from visiting Central Lafourche in a 63-62 victory.

Sophomore Canin Jefferson led the way with 22 points, sinking 6-of-9 from 3-point range. Jefferson added three rebounds and two assists.

Two other young stars tallied double-doubles for Newman.

Freshman Todd Jones had 12 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks, two steals and an assist while and sophomore Chris Lockett finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a steal points for the Greenies. Freshman Chris Leman added six points and 10 rebounds.

Newman (4-0) will host Mandeville at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hammond traveled to Mount Hermon and downed the Yellow Jackets 78-49 for its first win of the season.

The Tornadoes led 17-14 after one quarter and outscored Mount Hermon 23-13 in the second quarter to take a 40-27 halftime lead. The lead grew to 54-34 going to the final quarter.

Junior Devan Guillory led Hammond with 19 points, junior Devin Daniels had 14 points while senior Terrance Selders finished with 10 points.

Hammond (1-2) returns to action Thursday, hosting Albany at 6 p.m. while Mount Hermon (1-4) lost its fourth straight game. The Yellow Jackets will entertain Kentwood next Monday at 7 p.m.

In girls action, Mandeville traveled to Albany and came away with a 68-56 victory.

The Skippers jumped out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter and led 46-29 by halftime. It was 60-43 going to the final quarter.

UL Ragin’ Cajun commit Jaylyn James again led the way with 30 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists while senior Meagan Bubeck added 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Mandeville (4-1) will host Amite next Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the Hornets (4-2) lost their second straight game after opening the season with four straight wins. Albany will host Springfield next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
