Basketball: Landry edges Shaw, Country Day wins at Hahnville

Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Feb. 8

It was a showdown for District 10-4A supremacy between two excellent teams. The game lived up to expectations.

Landry held off Archbishop Shaw 60-58 in a thriller at the Landry gym Tuesday night.

Eagles star Kam Johnson came up just short on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer as the Buccaneers came away with a big win and control of the district.

Landry took a 17-12 lead after one quarter. Shaw turned the tables in the second quarter to take a 28-27 halftime lead. The game was tied 40-40 going to the fourth quarter.

Shaw built a 4-point lead in the fourth quarter but Landry rallied to win it.

Vo Nicholas led the way for the Buccaneers with 28 points, five rebounds and two assists. Jamal Smith finished with 10 points.

Johnson led Shaw with 25 points while Xavier Meyers finished with 16 points.

Landry was 10th while Shaw was third in the most recent Select Division II LHSAA power rankings.

Landry (18-9, 2-0) has won four straight games and the Buccaneers will play at Helen Cox Friday night at 6 p.m. in a district contest.

Shaw (20-5, 2-1) will also return to district play Friday night, hosting New Orleans Military & Maritime Friday at 7 p.m.

Country Day is positioning itself well for an excellent seed and deep run in the Select Division III playoffs.

Currently second in the power rankings, the Cajuns went to Hahnville and beat the Tigers 59-48 for their fifth straight win.

Jordan Trahan led the way for Country Day with 22 points while Maddox Moss and Cam Terrell each contributed 10 points to the victory.

Country Day (23-6) will close out its regular season Saturday at St. Martin’s Episcopal at 6 p.m.

Hahnville (17-14) returns to District 7-5A play Friday night at home against H.L. Bourgeois.
