Basketball: Carver tops McMain, Wright handles Karr

Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 30

Carver, SBW with solid wins; Kenner Discovery girls victorious (Ken T.)

In a battle of top 4A teams in the area and state, Carver proved best Friday night.

In an 11-4A showdown, the Rams fought off McMain 55-49 Friday night.

A pair of juniors powered both teams.

Solomon Washington tallied 17 points while Dorian Finister finished with 13 points for carver.

Nicholas Kaigler led the Mustangs with 14 points while Alex Hammond had 10 points for McMain.

Carver is No. 1 in the current LHSAA Class 4A power rankings while McMain is third, with Opelousas sandwiched in between the New Orleans powers in second place.

Back in action again Saturday, Carver (17-1, 2-0) will host Port Allen. McMain (14-5, 1-1) returns to district play, hosting Warren Easton Monday at 6 p.m.

Sophie B. Wright, ranked fourth in the Class 3A power rankings, scored an impressive 52-42 win over Karr.

It was close most of the way.

The Cougars led 12-11 after one quarter before Sophie B. Wright took a 23-21 lead at halftime. The Warriors led 38-34 going to the final quarter before outscoring Karr 14-8 in the final frame.

Ron James scored 12 points, Alton Newton III had 11 points and Kyle-Jared Malachar added nine points for the Warriors.

Shyves Johnson and Leland Smith each had 11 points for Karr, tenth in the Class 4A power rankings.

Sophie B. Wright (14-5) has now won six straight games. The Warriors return to action next Saturday against McMain while the Cougars (11-10) will host Belle Chasse Monday at 6 p.m. in District 10-4A play.

In girls action, Kenner Discovery easily handled Abramson Sci Academy 62-13 at home.

The Swamp Owls jumped all over the Commodores immediately, taking an 18-2 lead after one quarter and expanding the edge to 29-4 at halftime. It was 56-8 after three quarters.

Junior sharpshooter Isabella April scored 24 points, including six 3-pointers. Sophomore Camryn Johnson had 14 points and freshman Rhianna Jackson had 12 points for Kenner Discovery.

The Swamp Owls (11-13) return to action Monday, hosting Ursuline Academy at 5 p.m. while Abramson (0-6) will host M.L. King Charter Monday at 6 p.m.
