Basketball: Brother Martin edges Curtis, Pearl River takes district win over Franklinton

Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 18

Brother Martin rebounded from a tough road loss to powerful St. Augustine with a big road win Friday night.

The Crusaders edged John Curtis Christian 61-59 at River Ridge.

Brother Martin led 17-12 after one quarter and expanded the lead to 30-23 at halftime. The Crusaders led 48-39 after three quarters. The Patriots chipped away but the final margin was the closest the Patriots got.

Freshman Corey Skillman led the way with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists. Junior Grant DeLord had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Brock Ranlett added nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Brother Martin (20-3, 2-1) returns to action Tuesday, hosting Jesuit at 7 p.m. while John Curtis (8-10, 2-2) will host Archbishop Rummel Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pearl River handled Franklinton 76-53.

The Rebels took control early, taking a 23-13 lead after one quarter and it was 40-27 by halftime. The lead grew to 64-42 by the end of the third quarter.

Scott Todd led Pearl River with 25 points while Caleb Dreux had 16 points, five rebounds and five steals. Isaiah Rushing added 12 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and two steals for the Rebels.

Pearl River (7-12, 0-1) travels to Metairie to face St. Martin’s Episcopal at 7 p.m. Tuesday while the Demons (5-16, 0-1) have lost six straight and will host East Jefferson at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
