Basketball: Brother Martin awakens in second half to down Rummel, Chalmette beats Jesuit

Even with minimal contributions from star guard TJ Small, Brother Martin opened Catholic League play Friday night with big efforts elsewhere.

Four Crusaders finished in double figures as Brother Martin broke open a tight game in the third quarter to defeat Archbishop Rummel 70-47 at Conlin Gymnasium.

Brother Martin (19-2, 1-0) trailed 26-24 at halftime before going on a 15-3 run at the outset of the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Raiders 25-10 in the third quarter.

Small, a West Point signee, was held to two field goals and departed midway through the third quarter with an ankle injury.

Brock Ranlett scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Corey Skillman had 16 points, Davonn Moore 13 and Tijh Bell 10 for the winners.

Kade Rivera led Rummel with 15 points. Rowan Johnson had six of his 10 points in the second quarter, when the Raiders outscored Brother Martin 19-8 to take the lead at halftime.

At Chalmette, the home team proved to be superior to visiting Jesuit.

The Owls used a huge fourth quarter to defeat the Blue Jays 61-52.

Jesuit took a 16-15 lead after one quarter and the Blue Jays had a big second quarter, outscoring Chalmette 19-8 to take a solid 35-23 lead at halftime.

The second half belonged to Chalmette.

The Owls outscored Jesuit 18-6 in the third quarter to tie the game 41-41 and Chalmette dominated the fourth quarte 20-11 to take the victory.

Frank Ceaser led Chalmette with 18 points, Kemalice Anderson had 14 points and six assists, Patrick Allen had 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Chandler Henburg finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Chalmette (10-7) returns to action Tuesday evening at Archbishop Rummel while Jesuit (9-7) returns to Catholic League action Tuesday evening at Holy Cross.
