Area Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Nov. 19

The regime of former Bonnabel player and assistant coach Micah Hagans is officially underway at Bonnabel.

Hagans, who took over the Bruin program for Glenn Dyer this season after Dyer retired following 41 years on the job, is ready for the challenge.

Bonnabel opened its 2020-21 season with a 83-41 victory Thursday night over New Orleans Military & Maritime at the Bear Trap in Kenner.

The Bruins led 22-8 after one quarter and expanded the lead to 42-20 at halftime. It was 56-30 after three quarters.

Senior Theo Johnson led the way with 21 points, senior Jacquee Jefferson scored 15 and Louisiana Tech signee Will Allen finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

“I thought we played really well, starting out with some energy in front of our home crowd,” Hagans said. “We defended well. You could tell they were excited to be playing their first game at home in front of their home crowd. We took seven charges. That is something we stress and that was the biggest takeaway from the entire game.”

Bonnabel returns to action today at 5:30 p.m. at St. Amant.

“They are 1-0 and really good,” Hagans said. “They beat Belaire. They are good and they are well coached. It will be a challenge.”

New Orleans Military & Maritime will host West Jefferson Friday at 6 p.m.

It was an impressive start for the Mandeville girls Wednesday.

The Skippers went to Baton Rouge and smacked St. Michael, 82-34.

Mandeville controlled play from start to finish.

The Skippers took a 20-7 lead after one quarter and opened up a 48-19 lead at halftime. It was 65-29 after three quarters.

Senior Jaylyn James, a UL (Lafayette) signee, picked up where she left off last season, dazzling the Warriors with 31 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds, an assist and a block. Senior Meagan Bubeck scored 14 points, had six steals and four assists and three rebounds while Elisa Distansiao added 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist for the Skippers.

Mandeville returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mount Carmel Academy while St. Michael will host Archbishop Chapelle Friday at 5:30 p.m.
