METAIRIE – Vandebilt Catholic sat third in the most recent Division II power rankings.

It was easy to see why Monday afternoon.

Caleb Chauvin pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Terriers shut out Archbishop Rummel 4-0 at Mike Miley Stadium.

Chauvin walked just one and struck out four, using 102 pitches in an outstanding performance.

Scoreless into the third inning, Vandebilt Catholic broke through for three runs.

Seth Brown was hit by a pitch by Rummel starter and losing pitcher Brady Schmidt before Diego Archila tripled him home to make it 1-0. Jean-Luc Lapeyre was then hit by a pitch.

Caleb Ougel then executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt up the first base line for a single, scoring Archila to make it 2-0 before a throwing error added the third run.

The Terriers added their final run in the top of the sixth inning on singles by Dominic Archila and Eli David, followed by an RBI single by Owen Schexnaydre.

The Raiders only got two runners to second base in the first six innings on doubles by Mikey Ryan and Shane Hirstius before threatening in the bottom of the seventh.

Rummel loaded the bases with one out but Chauvin closed it out, striking out Gavin Kennedy and getting Evan Burg to fly out to end it.

Hirstius had two hits to pace Rummel and he pitched a scoreless inning.

Davis had two hits for the Terriers.

Vandebilt Catholic (17-3) has won seven of its last eight games. The Terriers will host St. Thomas Aquinas Thursday at 6 p.m.

Rummel (11-7-1) opens district play Tuesday night, weather permitting, against St. Augustine at Mike Miley Stadium at 7 p.m.
