Baseball: St. Paul’s stays hot with 16-2 win over Newman

Area Prep Baseball Report for Saturday, March 16

St. Paul’s traveled to Avenger Field in New Orleans and handled Newman 16-2 Friday in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Greenies actually scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before St. Paul’s scored twice in the top of the second. Newman scored a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game 2-2.

It was all Wolves the rest of the way.

St. Paul’s (10-3) scored twice in the top of the third to make it 4-2 before breaking it open with nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 13-2. St. Paul’s added three more runs in the top of the fifth.

Kyle Conigliaro had two hits and three RBI while Nick Vitale had two hits and two RBI for St. Paul’s. Beau Neelis also drove in three runs and Matthew Russo had three hits as the Wolves banged out 12 hits.

Jacob Scherer went three innings, striking out seven to pick up the win. The victory was the sixth straight for the Wolves. Newman fell to 5-9 with the defeat.

The two teams will play twice today at Heap Field in Covington at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
