Baseball: St. Paul’s, Covington to meet for 6-5A tournament title

Area Prep Baseball Report for Thursday, April 14

It will be the battle of Covington for the District 6-5A Tournament championship this evening with St. Paul’s at Covington at 6:30 p.m.

The Wolves edged Mandeville 2-1 at Mandeville Wednesday evening.

In a terrific pitcher’s duel, the game was scoreless into the seventh inning.

The Wolves loaded the bases and Cooper Winchester drew a walk, scoring the first run. Logan Pontiff then grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring a second run to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Skippers (14-15) loaded the bases and Wes Karr was hit by a pitch by reliever Easton LeBlanc to plate a run but LeBlanc got the final out to preserve a big win.

Winchester and Aidan Grab of Mandeville were outstanding on the mound.

Winchester went six and two-third innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six Lions with two walks. Grab went six and a third innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

The Wolves (15-12) had five hits and committed two errors while the Skippers had three errors.

Covington rallied to from behind to beat Fontainebleau 3-2 at home.

Scoreless into the fourth inning, the Bulldogs scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Carter Hurley to take a 1-0 lead and added to the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Pierce Boles and it was 2-0.

The Lions (22-8) rallied in the top of the sixth, loading the bases and scored a run on a fielder’s choice groundout by Cole Heck and it was 2-1. Then, the Bulldogs committed two crucial errors, scoring a pair of unearned runs to account for the winning margin.

Tyler Sambola got the win, going two and a third innings, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts in relief of Toby Cuevas, who went the first four and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Austin Canale started and pitched well for Fontainebleau (22-8) in a losing cause with his defense betraying him, allowing two unearned runs which made the difference. Canale allowed just two hits, walked six and struck out three.

Covington defeated St. Paul’s 6-3 at home on March 31.
