Baseball: Riverside, Riverdale post wins in Riverdale Tournament while PJP II defeats Salmen

Area Prep Baseball Report for Friday, March 4

Riverside Academy has a storied history in baseball, having won a state championship recently in 2017.

Marty Luquet has a storied history in coaching.

The two have merged and good results are certain to follow.

The Rebels shut out De La Salle 3-0 Thursday in the Riverdale Tournament.

Luke Hymel pitched six scoreless innings, scattering seven hits and struck out 10 Cavaliers. Hymel also singled, doubled and drove in the only run he would need at the plate.

The Rebels (3-5) will face Kenner Discovery today at 4:30 p.m. at Bonnabel Stadium.

De La Salle (2-3) with face Riverdale Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Riverdale picked up a pair of wins in its own tournament, downing Ben Franklin 13-4 and defeating Patrick Taylor 10-0 at Mike Miley Stadium.

The Rebels scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings and broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning.

In the win over Ben Franklin, freshman pitcher Michael Ford pitched four innings and struck out five to pick up his first high school win. Ethan Koenig had two hits and three RBI while Gage Dufour and Caden Lotz each had two hits and two RBI. Rocky McGuire had a hit and drove in three runs.

In the victory over Patrick Taylor, Dufour pitched five shutout innings, allowing just three hits with no walks and struck out seven. Koenig had two hits and an RBI while sophomore Travis Monroy had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.

Pope John Paul II made it three straight wins with a 6-2 victory at Salmen.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Jaguars scored three runs. Pope John Paul II put it away with three more in the sixth inning before the Spartans scored twice in the seventh.

Junior Cody Pisciotta had two hits and two RBI while junior Zach Dauzat had a hit and two RBI. Senior DJ Morris had a hit and an RBI and junior Carson Johnson added a pair of hits for the Jaguars.

Freshman Kade Lacoste picked up the win, going the distance, allowing two runs on four hits. Lacoste walked three and struck out five, using 97 pitches.

Pope John Paul II (3-2-1) will travel to Poplarville, MS next Tuesday for a doubleheader. Salmen (2-3-1) will play at Archbishop Hannan next Tuesday.
