Prep Baseball Playoff Report for Saturday, April 20

Three area teams advanced to the regional round of the LHSAA baseball state playoffs Friday.

In Non-Select Division II action, No. 10 seed Pearl River handled No. 23 Morgan City 8-1 to sweep the two-game series.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead after two innings on an RBI double by Thomas Mancuso but the Rebels took over from there, tying it with a run in the top of the third and taking the lead for good with a run in the top of the fourth. Pearl River broke it open with six runs in the sixth inning.

Jude Cooley was the hitting star. Cooley was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and single and drove in four runs. Brady Stevens had three hits and drove in two runs while Drake Sticker and Dalton Sabathe each had a hit and an RBI. Jacob Lott added two hits.

Xan Harwell pitched six strong innings to get the win, allowing one run on three hits. Harwell walked just one and struck out 11. John McQueen pitched a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout to finish it. Alex Orgeron started and took the loss for Morgan City.

Pearl River (25-8) advances to the regional round to travel to No. 7 West Feliciana in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday.

Also in Non-Select Division II action, No. 15 Belle Chasse advanced with a 17-1 win over No. 18 Grant to sweep the series in two games.

Belle Chasse took control from the start, scoring in each of the first four innings. The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the first inning, five runs in the second, six runs in the third and four runs in the fourth inning, banging out 15 hits.

Tate Dickinson had three hits, two RBI and scored four runs. Kyle Reeves had three hits and scored twice.

Jacob Black earned his sixth win, pitching four innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Black helped his own cause with two hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Alex Richardson had two hits and three RBI and Christian Mouriz had a hit and four RBI for the Cardinals.

Kaden Chandler drove in the lone run for the Cougars while Connor Rosenberg had two hits.

The Cardinals (21-11) advance to play at No. 2 Iota in the regional round.

In Select Division I, No. 15 St. Augustine had no problem dismissing No. 18 East Jefferson, winning 20-0 in five innings at Wesley Barrow Stadium to sweep the series 2-0.

The Purple Knights scored in each of the first four innings, including two runs in the first inning, one in the second, five runs in the third and 12 runs in the fourth inning.

CJ Cornelius picked up the win and helped his own cause with a double. Yerdin Castillo had a pair of doubles, Tyrin Kirklin tripled and had an RBI single, Troy Broen and Jayden Jackson each had an RBI double as St. Augustine banged out 14 hits.

The Purple Knights (15-18) advance to face a familiar foe in No. 2 seed and District 9-5A rival John Curtis Christian in the regional round. The Patriots had a bye. John Curtis swept St. Augustine 10-0 and 7-6 in the regular season.
