Prep Baseball Playoff Report for Sunday, April 20

No. 12 seed Covington is looking good.

The Lions advanced to the regional round of the LHSAA Non-Select Division I playoffs with a 6-5 win over No. 21 Destrehan at home Saturday to complete a two-game sweep of the opening round playoff series.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the top of the fifth inning, Covington erupted for five runs to take a 6-2 lead and held off the Wildcats for the win. Destrehan scored two runs in the fifth inning and a run in the bottom of the seventh but fell short.

Keith Aymani had two hits and two RBI while Joel Heck and Jackson Sharp each had two hits and an RBI for Covington. Bradley Miller got the win, going six innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Tyler Sambola got the final three outs to pick up the save.

Jayse DeGruy took the loss for Destrehan (18-15). DeGruy had a double and three RBI for the Wildcats.

Covington (25-8) will travel to No. 5 St. Amant in a regional round best-of-three series.

Chalmette is moving to the regional round of the LHSAA prep baseball playoffs for the first time since 2016.

The 15th-seeded Owls held off No. 18 Slidell 3-2 Saturday at Noel Suarez Stadium to win the Non-Select Division I best-of-three series two games to one. Chalmette bounced back from losing the series opener 1-0 to win the last two games.

Chalmette took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Malik Jupiter and an RBI double by Jaden Williams to lead 2-0.

Slidell stranded the bases loaded in the top of the third before the Owls added a run in the bottom of the third, which proved to be the difference. Latrell Grant bunted for a single and Cameron Tipton doubled him home to make it 3-0, though the Owls left the bases loaded.

The Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Troy Green and a steal of home on a double steal attempt. That ended the day on the mound for Joe Monaghan, who went 3 1/3 innings for the Owls. Cooper McNamara came in and did the job, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings to get his eighth win of the season.

Tipton and Jupiter each had two hits for Chalmette.

Austin Buell and Finn Gayle each had a double for the Tigers (21-13).

The Owls (30-6) advance to play at No. 2 seed West Monroe in the best-of-three regional round.

In Non-Select Division II, No. 20 Lakeshore rallied to win the final two games to defeat District 8-4A rival No. 13 Franklinton in its series. The Titans defeated the Demons 7-6 in eight innings and 12-6 Saturday.

The wins reversed the regular season results where Franklinton swept Lakeshore in district play.

In the first game, Reese Sanzone produced the game-winning run in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly while Gavin Stein, who had three RBI, got the win in relief.

In the second game, Lakeshore took the early lead and put the game away with 10 runs in the fourth inning. Logan Lomanaco got the win while Braden Braud had three hits and two RBI.

Lakeshore (14-18) advances to play at No. 4 Erath in the regional round in another best-of-three series.

In Select Division III, No. 13 Fisher blanked No. 20 Haynes Academy 6-0 to win the series two games to none.

Sophomore Jacob Bourgeois pitched a complete game two-hitter. Bourgeois walked four and struck out four. Bourgeois helped himself with a pair of hits. Lane Creppel, Royce Mamolo and Gabe McDonald each had a hit and an RBI to pace the Gators seven-hit attack.

Fisher (18-7) advances to the regional round to play a best-of-three series in Alexandria against No. 4 seed Holy Savior Menard beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
