In Select Division II, No. 11 Kenner Discovery started fast and held off No. 6 Buckeye 5-3 at Buckeye.

The Swamp Owls (19-10) scored three runs in the top of the first inning before the Panthers scored single runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings. Each team scored a run in the fifth before Kenner Discovery added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

Maddon Williams led the attack with a double, single and three RBI while Brennan Deist had an RBI double. Brayden Netterville added a double.

Netterville went the distance to get the win, allowing three runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out five.

First-year Swamp Owls head coach Nick Walker has done an excellent job and was thrilled with the win.

“It means a great deal for our players, family and community,” Walker said. “It’s a huge win for the program. We are turning the page here at Kenner Discovery. Our young men are scrappy and fight to the finish. We had great performances by everyone but I cannot say enough about Netterville. When He’s on, there’s no stopping us. Williams came up clutch for us. We played solid defensively. Camden Miller played an outstanding shortstop. Julian Carona made a huge play in the outfield in the seventh inning. It was a good team win.”

Haidyn Boone took the loss for Buckeye (23-10), going six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with two walks and eight strikeouts. Chris Cole pitched the final inning, allowing a run on three hits.

Drew Tyson doubled, singled and drove in a run while Seth Deplaines had two hits and an RBI. Jackson Clanton added a double for the Panthers.

The two teams will meet in game two Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Game three would follow immediately, if necessary.

“The goal is to win the second one and get on the bus and celebrate,” Walker said. “We’re trying to keep everybody humble. Kenner Discovery has never won games like this in the past. We are working hard to build a tradition.”
