Area Prep Baseball Report for Sunday, March 7

Destrehan has been a consistently solid program in recent years, turning out several good pitchers who have and continue to perform well at the college and junior college level.

If early returns are any indication, the Wildcats are a potent squad again in 2021.

Destrehan continued its outstanding start Saturday, sweeping a pair of games.

First, the Wildcats edged Fontainebleau 5-4.

Junior Cole Moran picked up the win.

In the second game, Destrehan shutout Northlake Christian 7-0.

John Carmichael picked up the win, pitching five shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four. Carmichael added two hits at the plate while Caleb Clouatre also had a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

Destrehan (5-2-1) also has a win over Archbishop Rummel, the only loss for the Raiders thus far, with its losses coming to elite teams in St. Paul’s and John Curtis, who have dominated Division I in recent years.

Destrehan will play at East Ascension in tournament play next Thursday at 4 p.m.

Slidell also swept a pair of games, defeating Northlake Christian 10-0 and downing Salmen 9-6 in the Covington Tournament at St. Paul’s.

In the win over Northlake Christian, the game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Slidell scored a run in the second and added five runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead. The Tigers scored three in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth to put the game away early.

Jay Davis had a double, a triple and three RBI while Matthew Pagano had a hit and three RBI to pace an 11-hit attack for the Tigers. Cameron Weiss had a hit and two RBI and Peyton Strahan had a hit and two RBI.

Trey Flettrich pitched a shutout, allowing just one hit and striking four in a complete game performance.

Against the Spartans, Salmen scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead before Slidell took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Spartans answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 4-2 lead.

The Tigers took the lead for good in the top of the fourth with three runs to make it 5-4 and added a run in the fifth to make it 6-4. Slidell opened up a 9-3 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth before Salmen scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Youth was served for Slidell.

Strahan, a sophomore, had two hits and two RBI while freshman Brady Johnson had a hit and two RBI. Sophomore Carson Johnson added a hit and an RBI and Davis, a junior, had two hits. Pagano, a senior, also had two hits.

Senior Cameron Weiss picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Weiss walked just one and fanned three hitters. Senior Noah Hughes pitched two shutout innings for the Tigers.

Slidell (5-6) travels to Lakeshore Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
