Baseball: Destrehan, Riverside, Ben Franklin with victories Monday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, April 4

Destrehan went on the road and edged Thibodaux 2-1 in a District 7-5A contest Monday.

John Carmichael went the distance, allowing no earned runs on four hits and struck out 10 in an outstanding performance to get the win. Carmichael helped himself with a double while Jayse Degruy doubled home a run.

Brady Mire homered for the Wildcats.

Destrehan (17-8, 3-0) will host East St. John Tuesday at 4 p.m. in 7-5A play while the Tigers (16-8, 1-2) are at Hahnville Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Riverside defeated South Plaquemines 10-4 at Reserve.

The Rebels scored a run in the first and five in the second to take a 6-0 lead. The Hurricanes scored twice in the top of the fourth but Riverside scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Each team scored a run in the sixth and South Plaquemines added a run in the seventh inning.

Ryan Poche doubled, singled and drove in three runs while Dane Delauneville had two hits and an RBI. Bennan Maus and Cameron Matt each had a hit and an RBI while Brody Vicknair added an RBI.

Vicknair picked up the win, pitching four innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits. Vicknair walked one and struck out four. Cruz Cambre pitched the final three innings.

Riverside (13-7-1) returns to action in District 10-1A play Tuesday at home against Varnado at 4 p.m. South Plaquemines (9-8) will play Booker T. Washington Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Ben Franklin broke open a close game late in an 8-1 victory over Douglass at Perry Roehm Stadium to give the Falcons sole possession of first place in District 11-4A.

The Bobcats took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first but the Falcons three times in the third to take a 3-1 lead. It stayed that way until the sixth inning when Ben Franklin scored twice to make it 5-1 and put it away with three runs in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run homer by junior shortstop Jacob Chapital.

Sophomore Ozzie Welch flirted with a second consecutive no-hitter, keeping the Bobcats hitless into the bottom of the seventh inning, when he allowed a pair of hits. Welch was outstanding, striking out 11 and walked no one as he lowered his ERA to 1.26.

Ben Franklin (11-9, 7-0) will meet Douglass (10-2, 6-1) again Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium
