Baseball: Anderson pitches shutout as St. Paul’s drops St. Aug; Loranger, Country Day win

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, March 16

It was the Kade Anderson show as St. Paul’s shutout St. Augustine 10-0 at Heap Field in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule Monday evening.

Anderson pitched a 1 hitter, allowing just a single to R. Stripling. Anderson walked two, hit a pair of batters and struck out nine, using just 89 pitches.

At the plate, Anderson had two hits and two RBI, including a 2-run home run in the fourth inning to pace a 10-hit attack.

St. Paul’s scored a run in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and ended it with four runs in the sixth inning.

Trent Caime came up huge, going 4-for-4 with a double, three singles and an RBI. Matthew Russo had a hit and two RBI while Hunter Corass had an RBI double for the Wolves. Corass scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to end it.

Ryan Stripling had the only hit for St. Aug, a single in the top of the sixth to end a no-hit bid.

Jeffrey Duroncelay took the loss, going four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with five walks and a strikeout. Genesis Prosper and Jalen Pierce finished up on the bump for the Purple Knights.

St. Paul’s (9-3) returns to action today, opening District 6-5A at home against Slidell at 6 p.m. St. Augustine (8-4) has lost three straight and the Purple Knights square off with St. Martin’s Episcopal tonight at 7 p.m. at Bonnabel Stadium.

Loranger won a slugfest, outscoring Hammond 14-12 at Hammond.

Each team scored a run in the first inning before Loranger took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the top of the second and made it 5-1 with two more runs in the third. The Tornadoes countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Loranger added four runs in the fourth and it was 9-3 but Hammond got the four runs back in the fifth inning and it was 9-7.

The Wolves scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 14-7 lead before Hammond rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell just short.

Junior Brandon Graham was the winning pitcher while freshman Jace Caves took the loss.

Senior Ethan Crayton was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for Loranger while senior Dane Vining was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Junior Cade Harper was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as part of a 12-hit Wolves attack.

Sophomore Konnor Graham was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Hammond while senior Scott Perise had a hit and three RBI and senior Kaden Slocum had a double and two RBI.

Loranger (3-9) has won two straight games and will face Lutcher Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the District 9-3A opener. Hammond (2-12) has dropped five straight games and the Tornadoes open District 6-5A play tonight at Fontainebleau at 6:30 p.m.

Country Day went to South Plaquemines and remained hot with a 16-4 victory.

Owen Marchal went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and drove in four runs. Dawson Simmons was 3-for-6 with two RBI and Dylan Simmons was 2-for-3 with a double, single and two RBI to pace the Cajuns.

Lance Hebert (2-0) was the winning pitcher.

Country Day (10-1) has won four straight games and the Cajuns will face Houma Christian Wednesday at Pontiff Playground at 5 p.m. The Hurricanes (0-6) will travel to West St. John today at 4 p.m.
