NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana native Avery Thibodeaux returns to the state as head coach Amy Grabiec named Thibodeaux the assistant coach for beach volleyball. Thibodeaux joins the Privateers after three seasons as an assistant indoor coach for Union in Kentucky.

At Union, Thibodeaux was instrumental in the 15-8 mark when joining the squad midseason in 2018. The team won 19 matches in 2019 and 13 last season. The 13 victories in a COVID shortened season earned Thibodeaux Appalachian Athletic Conference Assistant Coach of the Year.

“It means a lot to be back in Louisiana and assist in taking New Orleans beach volleyball to the next level,” said Thibodeaux. “I’m excited to work with Amy and work with a young team and it was an easy yes when we (Amy) spoke. Our expectations are to grow as a team with the mix of experience and newcomers.”

A Baton Rouge native, he graduated from LSU with a bachelor’s in sports administration. While there, he worked with the LSU beach volleyball program for two seasons, overseeing video and statistics, and LSU finished No. 5 nationally with an appearance in the NCAA National Championship Tournament.

Prior to working with LSU beach, he spent the 2016 campaign with LSU softball, and was a three-year member of the drumline of the Golden Band from Tigerland.

“With so much changing within our beach program, I am excited to have Avery Thibodeaux join our team,” said Grabiec. “For us to continue growing and to win at a high level, it was important to hire someone with an extensive recruiting background. With his experience, technical knowledge, leadership, and passion for the game, I have no doubt that he will help lead us to a championship.”
