Brackets: Dominican, Hannan, Newman, Country Day claim top seeds in LHSAA Volleyball playoffs

VOLLEYBALL BRACKETS

Will Country Day make it eight straight championships? Can Dominican win a fourth straight title? Will Newman claim a second straight championship? Can Archbishop Hannan win Division IV?

The four area schools earned top seeds in the five divisions for the LHSAA Volleyball state playoffs. The championships will be played Nov. 9-11 at the Cajundome in Lafayette.

The brackets were announced Monday.

In Division I, District 7-I rivals Dominican and Mount Carmel Academy, who have combined to win the last nine Division I state championships, are the top two seeds. The two rivals split a pair of matches in the regular season.

Three-time defending state champion Dominican (38-2) is the top seed and will host district rival and No. 32 seed John Ehret Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Dominican swept the Patriots in three sets on Oct. 10.

Perhaps the biggest threat to Dominican in the top half of the bracket is No. 4 seed Slidell, under first-year coach and state championship coach Danny Tullis, who built a championship program at Pope John Paul II previously. The Tigers host No. 29 Sulphur Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Mount Carmel (26-7) is the second seed. The Cubs, who won six straight state titles from 2014-19, will entertain No. 31 Lafayette Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Dutchtown (32-8) is the third seed. The Griffins host No. 30 Covington (19-23) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

No. 6 Chalmette (24-12) is home against No. 27 Northshore (13-22).

No. 8 Hahnville (25-11) plays host to No. 25 Captain Shreve Thursday at 5 p.m.

No. 9 Fontainebleau (24-15) will entertain No. 24 Scotlandville Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 10 Mandeville (18-12) plays at home against No. 23 Benton.

No. 11 Archbishop Chapelle (20-18) is at home against No. 22 Destrehan (22-13) Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Wildcats beat the Chipmunks in two sets on Sept. 30 in the Covenant Christian Tournament.

No. 13 Terrebonne (24-18) plays host to No. 20 Byrd.

No. 16 Ponchatoula (22-15) gets a home match with No. 17 Central Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 19 Central Lafourche (23-16) heads to No. 14 Southside.

In Division II, the top seed is St. Thomas More (29-5). The two-time defending state champion Cougars will face No. 32 Broadmoor in the opening round of the playoffs. St. Thomas More also won five straight state titles from 2012-2016.

Ben Franklin (33-7) earned the second-seed and the Falcons are home against No. 31 Ouachita Parish.

Teurlings Catholic (26-7) is the third seed. The Rebels, who won the title in 2021 and have been runner-up to St. Thomas More the last two years, will entertain No. 30 Booker T. Washington of New Orleans (17-23). Teurlings won four straight state titles from 2017-20. St. Thomas More and Teurlings Catholic have dominated the class, combining to win the last 11 state championships.

No. 4 St. Scholastica (22-13) hosts No. 29 East Jefferson (14-30).

McDonogh 35 (26-4) is the fifth seed and the Roneagles host No. 28 Plaquemine Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 6 Academy of Our Lady (25-9) is at home against No. 27 South Terrebonne (8-15) Thursday at 5 p.m.

No. 7 Belle Chasse (25-15) will host No. 26 Breaux Bridge.

No. 9 Assumption (18-22) will take on No. 24 Northwood.

No. 11 Kenner Discovery (19-12) entertains District 8-II rival and No. 22 Riverdale (13-19) Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Swamp Owls swept a pair of matches with the Rebels in the regular season.

No. 12 Lakeshore (14-15) is home against No. 21 LaGrange Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

No. 13 South Lafourche (22-17) will host No. 20 Neville.

No. 17 Karr (15-9) travels to No. 16 Ellender (20-17) Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Oaklawn Middle School in Houma. The two sides split a pair of regular season matches.

No. 18 Warren Easton (19-14) heads to No. 15 David Thibodaux.

No. 22 Carver (16-13) plays at No. 11 West Ouachita.

No. 25 Salmen (13-10) heads to No. 8 Beau Chene Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

In Division III, Archbishop Hannan (36-2) gets the top seed and the Hawks host No. 32 The Willow School (10-14) in the opening round.

E.D. White Catholic (29-8) is the second seed and the Cardinals are home against No. 31 Cecilia.

Parkview Baptist (29-7) is the third seed and the Eagles host No. 30 Ursuline Academy (14-20).

No. 4 Catholic of New Iberia (34-11) hosts No. 29 Douglass (13-9) Wednesday at 5 p.m.

No. 6 Vandebilt Catholic (32-9) hosts No. 27 Vinton.

No. 8 Haynes Academy (26-11) is home against No. 25 Church Point.

No. 11 Lutcher (19-11) entertains No. 22 Episcopal.

Defending state champion Dunham (17-20) gets a home match against No. 17 West Feliciana. With a win, the Tigers would be staring at Hannan in the second round.

No. 18 Patrick Taylor (13-13) travels to No. 15 Berwick (18-18).

No. 20 Pearl River (16-10) plays at No. 13 Westlake.

No. 21 Cabrini (20-22) travels to No. 12 Morgan City (23-16) Wednesday at 5 p.m.

In Division IV, defending state champion Newman (33-7) is the No. 1 seed. The Greenies entertain No. 32 South Plaquemines (2-17).

No. 2 John Curtis Christian (30-8) is home against No. 31 Baker Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

No. 3 Northlake Christian (30-7) will host No. 30 Amite (7-13).

No. 4 Calvary Baptist (21-4) is home against No. 29 Delcambre.

No. 6 Pope John Paul II (21-8) plays at home against No. 27 Mansfield.

No. 7 Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans (25-14) has a home match with No. 26 Collegiate of Baton Rouge.

No. 8 Thomas Jefferson (19-23) hosts No. 25 Port Barre.

No. 9 St. Thomas Aquinas (15-7) plays its opening round match today at home against No. 24 Sarah T. Reed (10-12) at 4:30 p.m.

No. 10 De La Salle (5-17) entertains No. 23 North Caddo.

No. 12 Doyle (14-15) is home against No. 21 West St. Mary (9-12).

No. 13 St. Charles Catholic (10-14) will play at home today against No. 20 St. James (13-17) at 5 p.m.

No. 15 Springfield (12-15) plays host to No. 18 Fisher (17-9) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Springfield Elementary School.

No. 19 Pine (8-15) makes a long trek to No. 14 Loyola Prep.

No. 22 Patterson (9-13) plays on the road today at No. 11 Many at 5 p.m.

In Division V, seven-time defending state champion Country Day (22-9) is the top seed. The Cajuns play host to No. 32 Northeast Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Westminster Christian (25-10) is the second seed and will play No. 31 Hamilton Christian Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

No. 3 Ascension Episcopal (26-14) plays host to No. 30 Hanson Memorial.

No. 4 Central Catholic (17-16) entertains No. 29 Slaughter Community Charter Wednesday at 5 p.m.

No. 5 McGehee (21-9) is home against No. 28 False River. The Hawks are the last team, other than Country Day, to win a Division V state championship, claiming the title in 2015.

No. 8 Crescent City Christian (24-13) will host No. 25 Catholic of Pointe Coupee Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 10 Covenant Christian (26-15) entertains No. 23 White Castle Wednesday at 5 p.m.

No. 14 Houma Christian (22-16) gets a home match against No. 19 Ascension Christian.

No. 15 Riverside Academy (17-15) plays No. 18 Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 21 Christ Episcopal (17-11) travels to No. 12 Northside Christian.

No. 22 St. Martin’s Episcopal (8-22) will play at No. 11 St. Edmund.

No. 24 Centerville (18-8) plays at No. 9 Episcopal of Acadiana.
