Soccer: Holy Cross, SSA post impressive wins

It was a good day on the pitch for Holy Cross and St. Scholastica Thursday.

In a match moved to Holy Cross, the Tigers whipped East Jefferson 4-1 in Gentilly. Holy Cross entered the match fourth in the most recent LHSAA Division II power rankings while East Jefferson was 14th.

Sebastian was the star for the Tigers, scoring a pair of goals. Camden Carroll and Ethan Garvey each added a goal for Holy Cross (6-2-1). The loss was the third straight for the Warriors (7-6).

The Tigers travel to Lafayette today for the Elite Invitational at Teurlings Catholic to take on defending Division II state champion St. Thomas More at 8 p.m. East Jefferson will host Carver Monday at 6 p.m. at Joe Yenni Stadium.

The Doves, ranked fourth in the latest LHSAA Division I power rankings, shutout Northshore 7-0, scoring three times in the first half and four goal in the second half in the District 4-1 opener for both teams at St. Scholastica Field to remain unbeaten. Northshore is seventh in the power rankings.

Brogan Bernades and Sydney Vincens each recorded hat tricks for SSA while Renin Shepherd recorded the other goal for the Doves (10-0-3, 1-0).

The Doves travel to always tough St. Thomas More next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars are the top-ranked team in Division II and played for the state title a year ago.

The Panthers (6-3-5, 0-1) return to district play Tuesday, hosting Fontainebleau at 5:30 p.m.
